WHAT:
In conjunction with announcing that Central Valley-based, family-owned Foster Farms is the first major poultry producer to be humane-certified by American Humane Association, Senator Yee and other lawmakers will discuss the importance of animal welfare to California’s producers and consumers. Given the news by Foster Farms, as well as Modesto-based egg producer JS West, regarding humane initiatives, California is leading a national trend. More than 40 percent of Sacramento consumers are “very concerned” about animal welfare. Detailed survey results will be available at the event.
American Humane Association’s 82-foot Red Star Rescue Rig, which has helped rescue teams save more animals in natural or manmade disasters than any other program, and a mobile educational exhibit will be on site for media tours and visual demonstrations.
The Red Star Rescue Rig has played a critical role in rescuing animals during 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and Superstorm Sandy. The rig is fully equipped with veterinary services, rescue gear and serves as the centerpiece of a fleet of boats and vehicles. Rescue workers will share tips for preparing pets for disasters like earthquakes and floods. Foster Farms is co-sponsoring the tour as part of its longstanding commitment to animal welfare and to commemorate its humane certification by AHA.
