Coyotes in our midst

Are there more coyotes among us or are we just now

reporting more sightings?

Neighbors have been reporting a surge in Coyotes sightings this past year even to the point that the city put up warnings at Orange Park. Everything South City has done an informal tracking of where the coyotes have been seen. We have had reports of them running across El Camino Real near Arroyo, off of Hillside both near Sunshine Gardens and further down towards Linden Avenue. Coyotes have long wandered the area above Avalon Park and Brentwood near the Golden Gate National Cemetery as well as all over Sign Hill and adjacent areas. We’ve also had reports of them crossing around Westborough and up near Olympic and also Winston Manor near Longford. It seems coyotes have the run of our city and can be seen just about anywhere.

It is a good reminder to keep animal food cleaned up and be aware of your small pets although we have not had any reports of harm done to anything by the coyotes. They tend to stay away from people and we need to remember they are wild animals and we need to follow their lead and stay away from them as well.

Recently one person submit a video of the late night cries heard near Sign Hill yet we have not been able to get a photo until now. We thank Cynthia Marcopulos for sharing her photo with us. Over 40 of our FB friends LIKED this photo with many more sharing comments.

We asked our Facebook friends ‘What do you see?’ and these were the responses. On the second day we answered that the location was up around Winston Manor, near the Chinese Cemetery.

Do you have any sightings to report? Please let us know!

saw one along the cliffs south of Ft Funston. Folks, coyote are awesome and magical and will not attack unless you are close to a den (rare). They will eat gophers, feral cats, mice, rats, and little dogs off leash. It’s time to wise up and let nature control our overabundance of feral cats and rodents. they won ‘t attack your kids any more than raccoons would- they are wild and must be respected but generally have no interest in you. Keep your cat inside, your dog on a leash, and enjoy them and don ‘t feed them. I’m a biologist and grew up in the East Bay. Seeing them or hearing their howls are something you ‘ll never forget.

This is so unnerving.

There was a coyote on the hill behind my house on Dundee Drive on 4/18/15. I took photos of him/her as she was being dived at by a Raven. It did not seem to be afraid of me at all.

There was a coyote kept howling for an hour in our neighborhood at around 4am last night. The location is right next to the Westborough Middle School, and I think it was wandering in the meadow next to the school. I couldn’t see it in the dark, but sounds like there was only one howling. Although I have heard that they are in woods near Skyline, but the prolong howling is quite unusual.

I live in the same location. We just saw two coyotes at 11:30 pm in the field/woods at Athy (just below Skyline) in April, which is the area you are referring to. They do live there and have been there at least since early 2013. They were all over Westborough Green streets in 2013 every day and night. I saw one in the common green at 11:30 pm last year eating food out of a bag it found in the bushes. They are still roaming here but I have not been looking for them as I did in 2013. Most people here have not seen them and do not believe we have coyotes roaming here. But they are here to stay, and as SSF says, we have to make the adjustment.

My family and I were returning home to Mandalay Heights @6:45 pm on 11/10/2014 in our car. Approximately 1 block on South San Francisco Private road (near the TerraBay gymnasium), we spotted a family of 3 coyotes: 1 adult and 2 babies.

They froze for 30 seconds when they saw our headlights, but as I honked the car horn, they scampered up into the hills.

We have been hearing coyote cries every night this week. In fact, it usually happens around midnight to 2 am daily.

We had a coyote walking across our backyard fence last night 8/19/2014 in San Bruno. We live on Whitman Way and we have a deer fence that separates our yard from a wooded area. The coyote jumped off of the fence once our dogs started barking.

This is serious. He will be back. If you let the dogs out in the backyard in the morning and evening, you need to be with them and with a big stick.

This is a report in Daly City – if anyone knows a site specific to Daly City I can report to, please let me know. Last Thursday (8/7/14), my neighbors cat was eaten by a coyote on Wilshire Ave @ Fieldcrest Drive. I live on Fieldcrest, and have seen zero raccoons, skunks, squirrels, or possums at all this summer. They usually come to eat the pears that fall from my tree, but not a single one this year.

We saw a coyote in our back yard in South City yesterday evening. We are located near Junipero Serra and Hickey Blvd. He/she was only there for a minute or so and then left.

In the case of the coyotes living in the fields at Athy and Carter, there are at least 5 of them. It is a fact that one or more persons were feeding them in the fields, and then stopped feeding them sometime early last year, therefore they came down all through Westborough Greens looking for food because they were starving. Further, there was hardly any rain last year so they did not have gophers and moles to eat in the fields, not that that would sustain them. The parents have new pups now and the parents will be coming down more frequently to Westborough Greens again soon. Again I will put out warning signs. My last standing laminated sign on Greendale was removed recently, I assume by a realtor, again.

A coyote turned into my common green today at Greendale, between Kent and Fairfax at 7:00 am. He came up the walkway and then came up along the house fence lines. About a month ago a coyote was in the common green between Kent and Crofton, threatening a man with two dogs. He stared at the man and the man was able to pick up his dogs and go into his yard. There was an incident at King and Callan a few weeks ago around midnight when a coyote attacked two dogs being walked, a pit and shepherd. Police came. Dogs were ok. Here we go. We have to live with this. It will get much worse as the pups will need to be fed. I have prepared new warning signs. Unfortunately, last year, realtors took them down.

We’ve seen coyotes many times in Westborough area, Callen Blvd, Cater Dr…. The hill side between Cater Dr and Skyline Blvd should be their home where coyotes were found many times, neigbour said that 4~5 coyotes were seen at a time. I saw Coyote walking across the Callen Blvd toward Skyline Blvd direction few times. Once I was talking with a neighbor who with her dog at Cater Dr., a coyote stand behind the wall where the hill side is. The coyote was starring at us for few minutes but believe the dog should be the target. Please do not let your pet be alone even little kid.

coyotes are and can be very aggressive. a neighbor was having a childs birthday party while a group of coyotes were watching. father pulled kids indoor afraid of what might happen. this happened on carter cross from the fields. also on carter a family of coyotes followed a jogger home early morning, they did not seem to be afraid of him. they seem to be less and less afraid of humans. carter is between king and westborough blvd close to Greendale.

My daughter was walking on Carter Dr. on her way to Westborough Middle School yesterday morning (August 15) and saw what she called a ‘wolf’ carrying a dead cat in its jaws crossing the street. She says it was less than 10 feet from her. She was more grossed out by the dead cat than afraid. I immediately knew it was a coyote, since there have been so many sightings. We’ve told her if she sees it again to make herself seem big, make a lot of noise, and use her backpack as a weapon if necessary!

better to cross the street quietly and avoid and only retaliate if necessary and try not let children walk alone better in groups or with adults

I live on Kent Way off Greendale Dr. in Westborough Greens. I believe Gary saw the same coyote that is coming down Greendale every morning and evening. Save those pictures Gary.
Humane Society will do nothing except tell you how to live amongst coyotes. I am trying to call the city and request warning signs. I have put up a couple of signs on Greendale. I would like the City to start a trapping program, like is being done in Saratoga. What wiill it take for the City to take some action. Since this area is condensed townhouses and condos, people let their little dogs and cats out in their small backyards without supervision, unaware of the danger upon us.
This same coyote is coming here every day using the same route: cross in the crosswalk on Callan, come down King Drive, go through Skyline Village Apts., or turn right on Savanah, turn left on Greendale, stop at Kent Way and eat cat, go down to Galway and Julie Lane and eat cat. Come back up Greendale when done. Morning timeframes: 7:15 through 8:30 am. Then evenings for dinner around 11:00pm or earlier.
Yes, I am Momma to Missy, who was eaten on July 3, as documented by Matthew above, and one street witness who filed a police report of a coyote going up Greendale with a cat in its mouth. Nice for kids to see that. I mean people were waiting for the bus. Missy was in our yard until she heard the coyote. She looked over the fence and booked, thinking she could get away.
Missy was taken to the common green lawn by the coyote and close to the sidewalk and playground. Her head, shoulders and arms remained. There is a little tyke playground there. Really nice for little kids to see that too. It is not safe for little kids to be playing there or any of our playgrounds now.
We have a nuisance coyote causing damage and people in this area are still unaware. People don’t always read signs. A warning mailer from the City would help. So now we have to take a walk in our area and carry a stick and a can of change to make noise if we see a coyote. And don’t turn your back on a coyote or run. I have lived here for 35 years and this is no longer a safe place to live. Wait until this coyote brings its pups down here for training.

is it possible that this is the same coyote that tried to get into a downstairs apt thru an open window, these apts are on callan between westborough and king cross from 7-11 on king, the woman said it was a warm nite and her window was open with no screen and it was between 430am and 5am, her dog went crazy when she and her husband went to see what was going on they spotted what they thought was a dog trying to come thru the window it stared at them then quietly turned and left and showed no fear.

Took a photo today of a coyote by the Skyline Village Condos/Apts trotting up Meath heading to the bushes on Athey. Didn’t seem scared of me following him in my car and snapping pics. Who do we call if we see a coyote? Humane society??

I’m in buri buri. There’s been one living in the hilly part of our yard. I have noticed less cats on the hill and the coyote seems to be hunting for mice.

Yes that was my ca “Missy” alright. I just want to know when the police bulletin came out. “Missy” was startled in my back yard Wednesday morning. I haven’t seen her until I found her remains on the grass between Kent and Crofton. I have a cat trap out to get my last feral cat in now before he is next. The Ecosystem in Westborough seems to be supporting the coyote population and there population is rapidly increasing. I saw one trotting on Appian way by Selleck park at 8:30pm and over off Olympic/fleet wood area. I took a walk around the common green areas and noticed the lack of neighborhood animals(cats, skunks, possums, etc.)

Just found my dear cat “Missy” half eaten by coyotes one block up from my home in Westborough. The coyotes are combing my neighborhood up until 7:30-8am. Is there anything being done to control the coyote population? I saw 2 children at the bus stop no more than a 1/2 block away from where i found my dead cat. Are the local neighborhood residence going to have to take matters into their own hands(I know, this is not the right remedy). Coyotes are primarily nocturnal animals for when they do a majority of their hunting. Don’t walk you small dog at night for the time being.

They have been on the 500 block of Railroad Ave, as well as the 400 blk. On Circle Ct 2 were seen at 10;00 am. I wish the biotechs could help out with a form of birth control. Tranquilize them and insert a long lasting form of birth control. I dont want to see anything bad happen to them, but something has to give. To many dogs have been snatched right off their leashes. So any Biot3ch feel up to a challenge? I’m sure there will be a substantial profit to be made. More importantly people wont feel the need to harm them But if one got my animal, I’m not sure I would them hanging around anymore

A coyote was trotting down the sidewalk in Westborough this morning, 7:30 a.m., at Greendale Drive and Crofton. This is too close for comfort. Yesterday I saw a coyote running down the street at 3:30 p.m. on Inverness and Manor at the top of Pacifica, which is close to Westborough. Other recent sightings have been on King Drive and Callan Blvd., running by the storage facility toward Skyline, and turned right on Skyline. There are too many sightings now and the City needs to take action and put up signs and possibly some eradication. Coyotes take little kids and there are playgrounds in the common green areas here.

I can confirm a coyote sighting by selleck park in late april 2013. I saw a coyote jogging in the middle of the street leaving the Appian way apartments around 8:30pm. I live off of Olympic and have heard the yips and yelps from coyotes around 4 am as I left for work.

My friend and I were walking the Centennial trail behind the open piece of the Colma Creek. He/she came out from behind some condos on Mission Road, prancing across the open field with something black (a cat??) in its mouth. This was at 8:15 in the morning. The next day I was walking at a 5K at Sunshine Gardens school. As we walked the upper field I mentioned that this might be a good walking course for my friend and I. Someone walking behind me told me to be careful as a coyote was spotted the day before right there. Poor things. They are losing their habitat and food supply. Cat??? Yuck.

I contacted my vet who said, “There have been many coyotes this year in the cemeteries and open space. They have been around for years. Don’t leave food outside.”
