South San Francisco, CA September 5, 2013
Local Veterans Leo McArdle and John Pieretti are the two men behind this upcoming fundraiser benefiting WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA on Friday October 11 up at the SSF ELKS Lodge. The proceeds and donations will benefit this national project here in our own area at the Golden Gate National Cemetery (GGNC) in San Bruno during December when local groups place wreaths upon the graves of those who have served in the military and are buried in the GGNC. The reason this program was started was a way to acknowledge those have ‘an empty seat at the table’ during the holiday season. This is the 8th year of Wreaths Across America and this year’s event will start on Saturday December 14 at 8:45 and is open to the public.
As we continue to lose soldiers daily, the wounds become deeper for many, and this gesture has been shown to bring some comfort to those families and friends who must endure the holiday season without the ones they love. And it also offers the opportunity for us to remember those who have fought for our country, that they never be forgotten even when our own lives become so busy.
The mission of
Wreaths Across America is to ‘
Remember, Honor, Teach’ and is carried out in part by coordinating wreath laying ceremonies a specified Saturday in December at Arlington, as well as veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond’ according the their website. They also organize a week of events including ‘international veteran’s tributes, ceremonies at State Houses and a week-long “Veteran’s Parade” between Maine and Virginia where we stop along the way to spread our message about the importance of remembering our fallen heroes, honoring those who serve, and teaching our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms.’
The cost of each wreath is $15 and we cannot let one grave go without being remembered. That is why this fundraiser is so important as we lead up to the holidays. Please come out and support this event. Let those who are serving know that they too will never be forgotten for their service, and for all the families who also are making sacrifices on our behalf. Donations are also greatly appreciated and can be payable and sent to
