FIRE & WATER Concerns & Solutions UPDATE- Drought now official

South San Francisco, CA   January 16, 2014

UPDATE; Gov declares drought state of emergency

FIRE & WATER INFORMATION:

While this weather is incredible, it is also incredible to have RED FLAG warnings in January – but we have ’em.

Extreme fire weather conditions are predicted for the next 24-48 hrs. Use extreme caution when working outdoors especially to folks in the area of Emerald Hills, Woodside, Skylonda, Los Trancos Woods/Vista Verde, Palomar Park, Skyline, Ladera, Portola Valley, La Honda, Kings Mountain.

All open land is dry including Sign Hill & San Bruno Mtn so pls keep a lookout and report any concerns to 911 asap.

This incredible weather is also causing us to seriously step up our water conservation. Leave your tap running for less time at less force. Use gray water, like rinse water from your washing machine, to water gardens.  More on the weather impact on our water sources can be read HERE.

More ideas, freebies & rebate information available from CalWater HERE. South City is part of their BAYSHORE DISTRICT with the exception of a square mile in Westborough which is serviced by Westborough Water.

Drinking Waterwater score from purdex.com 2

While we are on the subject of water, many people ask how safe is our drinking water.  Thanks to Purdex for rating our state water city by city.  South San Francisco gets their water from San Francisco Water (originates at Hetch Hetchy) with a score of 741 with the state average being 586.  Purdex defines Good (600-799) within this criteria:
Water systems in this group have no real issues with regulated contaminant occurrences or meeting drinking-water standards. Contaminants might be detected, but their impact on overall water quality is less significant.

They rate water at five levels:

Exceptional: 2%

Very Good: 9%

Good: 49%

Adequate: 23%

Challenged: 17%

More information on this rating system can be found HERE

This great news reinforces the fact our own tap water may be healthier than bottled water which is not regulated and comes to you in plastic containers. Start pouring your tap water and save $$!
