New Science Building to Open in South San Francisco, the “Birthplace of Biotechnology”

Facility at El Camino High School will help prepare students for career opportunities in the region’s booming science, engineering and technology industries

Background: Known throughout the Bay Area as the “Birthplace of Biotechnology”, South San Francisco has long been home to the biotechnology industry, which has helped revolutionize modern medicine and healthcare, as well as our understanding of the human body. In order to support the local industry’s continued growth, as well as to prepare its students for successful careers in biotechnology and bioengineering, the South San Francisco Unified School District has focused considerable resources in recent years towards augmenting STEM education programs.

 

On Tuesday, South San Francisco Unified School District leaders will unveil the new science building at El Camino High School. The new two-story facility, constructed with Measure J bond dollars, will feature six science classrooms and two prep rooms, complete with all new furnishings and modern lab equipment to support student learning in science, engineering and technology.

 

The ribbon cutting ceremony will be attended by city officials from South San Francisco and Daly City, who will join the District in celebrating the local effort to provide students with modern technology and equipment to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to lead the next wave of advancements in science and technology and maintain the region’s longstanding position as the center of global innovation.
