On May 24, 2014 at approximately 2314 hours, a driver of a 2005 Toyota Camry, was involved in a single car collision with a street light pole on the 1300 block of Mission Road in South San Francisco. The vehicle was observed by witnesses driving an estimated 60-80 MPH on Evergreen Drive, approaching the intersection with Mission Road. The vehicle failed to stop for the posted sign and attempted to make a right turn right onto northbound Mission Road. Due to the excessive speed, the driver failed to negotiate the turn and struck the curb on the west side of Mission Road. The vehicle continued forward where it struck a street light pole head on.
The vehicle was badly damaged and the driver escaped without injury. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, later identified as Maria Cruz Montiel, was contacted by the police. She displayed objective symptoms of intoxication and further investigation determined she was under the influence of alcohol. Cruz-Montiel was under the legal age to consume alcoholic beverages and was unlicensed. Cruz-Montiel was arrested and booked into the San Mateo County Jail.
