SSFPD Media Release: Fraud / Obtaining Money Under False Pretenses

South San Francisco,  CA     May 8, 2014    Submitted by SSFPDSSFPD logo

On 5-6-14 at approximately 0800 hours, a South San Francisco resident received a telephone call at his residence from an unknown suspect who identified himself as “Bexter Cruz” from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).  The unknown suspect told the resident he owed $4,850.00 and had to pay within one and half hours  or he would  be arrested by IRS “officers.”  The unknown  suspect directed the resident to obtain the funds in cash and load them onto Green Dot prepaid  gift cards. The resident followed the instructions  and  obtained the prepaid  gift cards. The resident  then telephoned  the  suspect back  and provided the access numbers on the back of the cards, granting the unknown suspect access to the funds.

South San Francisco residents are encouraged to be extremely vigilant and suspicious when receiving telephone calls from unknown suspects making statements about owing money and transferring funds by prepaid gift cards. Ifyou have been a victim of any of these scams in South San Francisco or have any information, residents are encouraged to telephone the South San Francisco Police Department at (650) 877-8900 before making any transactions.
