South San Francisco, CA  July 15, 2014  Submitted by Kaiser PermanenteSSF_2

Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco Medical Center is among 19 Kaiser Permanente Hospitals being recognized as “high performing” hospitals according to U.S. News & World Reports’ 2014-15 Best Hospitals in America rankings, published today.

The annual rankings, considered to provide an objective analysis of the nation’s medical centers, are derived from the evaluation of nearly 5,000 hospitals. This year’s rankings include the top 17 U.S. hospitals overall and the top 50 according to their performance in 16 key medical specialties. Now in its 25th year, the report also analyzes and rates facilities in most states and in major metropolitan regions (all U.S. regions with at least 500,000 in population).

“Kaiser Permanente’s outstanding performance in the U.S. News & World Report ratings reflects our continued commitment to quality and achieving the best health outcomes for our members,” said Pat Courneya, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer for Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan.  “This recognition of our specialty care is directly attributable to the tens of thousands of dedicated physicians, nurses, clinicians and care teams who excel in proactive prevention of illness, early detection of disease and better treatment of chronic conditions.”

In all, the 19 Kaiser Permanente facilities were rated “high performing” in 12 different specialties.

“These rankings are a celebration of our commitment to keeping the patient at the center of everything we do here at Kaiser Permanente,” said Amy Compton-Phillips, MD, chief quality officer, The Permanente Federation, the national umbrella organization for over 17,000 physicians who provide care to Kaiser Permanente’s approximately 9.3 million members.

“Our members have regular access to highly skilled, expertly trained physicians, nurses and staff who are committed to providing compassionate, coordinated, affordable health care. Our integrated, evidenced-based approach enables Kaiser Permanente to deliver the highest quality care to every patient who walks through our doors.”

Hospitals in the U.S. News & World Report survey were ranked according to reputation, mortality, patient safety and other areas, including nurse staffing and technology. For more information and complete rankings, visit U.S. News & World Report.

The Best Hospitals recognition by U.S. News & World Report follows the spring 2014 release of the “Hospital Safety Scorecard” by the Leapfrog Group, in which nearly all Kaiser Permanente hospitals that were included in the survey received an A rating, the highest rating given, and none lower than B.
