'I never knew his name, I just called him champ. Sad that it took his passing to finally know his name. R.I.P Bernabe aka San Bruno's Champ' -MatekuoLava Ofa

‘I never knew his name, I just called him champ. Sad that it took his passing to finally know his name. R.I.P Bernabe aka San Bruno’s Champ’ -MatekuoLava Ofa

A local legend has died. A man, simple in many ways, who made his life’s purpose uplifting others with his smile, his words, his appreciation for all those he knew, and those he didn’t know. Some knew his name as Barnaby, others as Champ, or Batman. Others knew him as the skinny guy in San Bruno, on El Camino Real and on San Mateo Avenue, who would wave to everyone wishing them the best day.  His ‘official’l name is Bernabe Jr. Latorre Lactawen.

Bernabe was hit by a car on the afternoon of  Sunday July 6 as he was crossing El Camino Real. The 57 year old sustained head trauma and was pronounced dead at SF General Hospital. At his side on the roadway while waiting for emergency response was Erika Rhinehart. She shared the following in response to the outpouring of love shown to Bernabe on social media;

‘He was severely injured and not moving except for his head a little…. It was twitching … I do not think he was conscious but I could just tell he was a sweet soul so I had to comfort him … The driver was in shock and stayed by his car until they could question him. People said he crossed a red light. It’s so nice to know that people liked him so much. Strangest thing but I could feel that from him…. I just hope if he was conscious he could feel my hand and hear my voice and it helped!

The community is coming together to honor Bernabe and celebrate his life this Friday. Victoria Hursh Sciacqua has organized a WAVE & WALK event and Victoria’s details follow below:

1). We will meet at 5:45pm, on the corner of El Camino and Jenevein, in front of the hotel, to say a prayer for Barnaby!! We will then walk El Camino to Crystal Springs to Oak and back down Jenevein.

2) Please wear your favorite sports teams t-shirt or sweatshirt. Barnaby loved them all so please no rivalry comments on this night!!

3). I will be making a sign for me and my family to carry on the walk, I would love to see as many signs of honor and love as we can possibly get.

4). I know that Barnaby loved the San Bruno bars so after the walk, if you would like to gather at one of them to continue honoring Barnaby, please do so….but PLEASE do NOT drink and drive!!!

5). If you are unable to join us for the walk, please honor Barnaby wherever you may be that day by waving & smiling at everyone you pass. A smile from a stranger can totally the course of one’s day!!!

Family raising funds for memorial

The unexpected death of Bernabe has left family scrambling to raise money to cover his memorial services. Please consider donating, every dollar helps! Bernabe’s niece, Karissa Ishere, his brother David’s daughter, has set up a GO FUND ME page and is asking for our help. Karissa writes

‘On Sunday, July 6th, 2014, Rose Jose received the phone call no one wants to pick up. It was the San Bruno Police Department baring shocking and difficult news.

Bernabe Jr. Latorre Lactawen, son of the late Bernabe and Salome Lactawen, had been hit by an oncoming vehicle during his daily walk and was rushed to the nearest hospital to undergo immediate surgery.

Despite medical efforts, Bernabe suffered from head trauma and internal bleeding. He did not survive the accident and passed away an hour later.

Not only is the family struggling to absorb the news, but we are also scrambling to cover the costs of an appropriate memorial.

Please donate whatever you can to his cause, we greatly appreciate anything and everything as we cope with this loss.’

No matter where I went over the years, even after I stopped hanging in the area, when he saw me, it was a big show and a loud “MY FRIEND!!!!! ASSSHHH!!! MY FRIEND!”. I don’t think there was ever anyone I’ve ever met that was just so happy to see everyone he knew, which is why I bet he frequented the places he did. Just to see his friends, which was everyone.

I knew Barnabe as “Boy” – he was my sister’s boyfriend’s Uncle. He was always happy and smiling. He came to my birthday picnic up at Tomales Bay. He was invitig everyone at the park to our table to come eat! LOL I will never forget that. He was such a gentle, happy soul and I know he is now with Lula (his MOM) up in heaven right now. R.I.P. “Boy” you will never be forgotten and you’ve touched so many people with your good heart and happiness.
