The city of South San Francisco successfully rolled out its proposed Downtown Plan at a public forum on July 24 attended by over 200 residents, merchants and interested persons.

“We planned for success at the Public Open House event,” said South San Francisco Mayor Karyl Matsumoto, “and with such excellent turnout, the public has really validated the City’s excitement for the Plan.”

During the forum, city staff presented the proposed Downtown Plan to an engaged audience, outlining key areas of the Plan. After the presentation, participants were given the opportunity to learn more about the Plan and provide feedback to staff at learning stations detailing the Plan’s land use component, public right-of-way improvements, and proposed public plazas. South San Francisco Mayor Karyl Matsumoto, Vice-Mayor Richard Garbarino and Councilmembers Mark Addiego, Pradeep Gupta and Liza Normandy all attended and participated in the forum.

South San Francisco’s proposed Downtown Plan aims to create a successful and vibrant downtown, promote new mixed-use residential developments and affirm the historic Grand Avenue Corridor as the centerpiece of the community. The Plan includes pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly improvements, landscaped green spaces, widened sidewalks, new streets and mass transit options designed to improve the business and residential quality of life in the City.

Next steps for the proposed Downtown Plan include review by the Parking Place Commission, the Design Review Board, the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee. The City Council and the Planning Commission will also hold hearings on the proposed Plan with the goal of having it adopted by the end of 2014.
