The City Council announced the red light cameras located on El Camino Real at Westborough/Chestnut and at Hickey Blvd will be discontinued as of August 13th. Those who drive by the area may notice workers dismantling the equipment during the next few weeks.
The decision not to renew the ATS red light camera contract was made at the March 27, 2014 City Council meeting. The the majority of council members voted in favor of not renewing the contract with Mayor Matsumoto voting to keep the red light cameras in place. Information on this decision can be found on this LINK HERE
The public is strongly encouraged to remain mindful of the need for complete stops at all intersections and to take extra pre-caution where the cameras had been placed.
Always good advice ‘Drive safely so everyone can reach their destination safely’.
I don’t run red lights, so that’s not my issue. I’ve read that the total fine for running a red light is $351 (first offense) if stopped by a police officer and ticketed, but the camera nails you for almost $500! Why the big difference?
The confusion comes from people that see the light turn red, and sit through the entire light cycle until it turns green again. You ever watch all the cars that cut through the Jack In The Box parking lot or the gas stations to avoid the camera. That is far more dangerous to pedestrians than the corner. I’m surprised we haven’t heard of injuries from that.
For those ticketed by a camera, here’s the website for everything you might want to know: http://www.highwayrobbery.net
I have made an illegal turn and got a ticket. I got it because it was an illegal turn. The same as not stopping. 1 mile an hour isn’t a stop. The sign said STOP not slow down. I don’t know what the confusion is.
A right turn after a full stop is legal. With video, you will win in court.
redlight cameras at hickey are disabled. redlight cameras at westborough are also disabled.
Mayor Matsumoto explained that she was concerned with crossing pedestrians; redlight cameras would prevent many folks from rolling the red light and crosswalk to turn right on westborough blvd. ideally, they would come to a complete stop at the red light, noticing redlight cameras, before proceeding to make a right turn.
Good riddance, I hope the one’s at Hickey are the next to go. As far as “with Mayor Matsumoto voting to keep the red light cameras in place”. guess who I won’t be voting for in the next election. I don’t know of any one of my friends in town that like those lights, so Mayor Matsumoto is not representing us!
the ticket was approx. a yr ago, at the time friends in the area told us there was not a chance going to court being they have video. Which I felt also at the time that it was against our constitutional rights.. but being I was so ill also husband couldn’t take time to go to court…… I feel that we should be reimbursed especially since now they are removing these red light cameras… thank you Ed
I want to know if those who have been ticketed nearly $500.00 on the red light will get our money back, we had just moved back here from living across the bay for 15 yrs, and never had seen a red light camera, as far as we knew we could turn right on a red we slowed down to like 1 mile a hour and it was clear to turn…. that ticket was a major upset to our monthly budget, as I am handicapped and get no aid, my husband is the only provider, I have a lot of major medical expenses and both of us have high medication costs…… paying that fine put us behind on all….. we feel it was unfair and unjust………. PLEASE let us know if we can reclaim our money…………
Hi Phillip,
Your question would best be directed to the SSF PD and they can be reached at 650/877-8900
If you have not yet paid your ticket, many residents have found going to court to contest the ticket may result in a reduced fine.
Thank you.

Did you mean August 31st or 13th?
Hi Peggy,
That is August 13th. Workers are now in the process of dismantling the equipment. Thank you.
