SSFPD Media Release: Attempted Fraud on the 300 Block of Maple Ave

The South San Francisco Police Department continues to see a risen fraudulent telephone scams targeting its citizens.

On08/01/14, a business owner of South San Francisco (300 block of Maple Avenue) was contacted via telephone and was told she owed money to PG&E.The suspect told her she owed $207 in back bills and if she did not pay immediately, the electricity to her business would be shut off within the next 30 minutes. He instructed her to purchase a Green Dot cash card for the “Owed” amount, call him at 866-978-0291, and to tell him the serial numbers to the rear of the card so the card could be cashed out by him. The business thought it was suspicious and did not provide any money or personal information. The entire conversation was conducted in Spanish. Please report any similar  occurrences and do not send or transmit money without verifying the company’s legitimacy.
