Onramp metering lights to start NB 101 in SMC
Ramp meters have been installed at 18 onramps in the northbound direction of U.S. Route 101 Ramp Metering Project.
November 4, 2014, ramp meters will be activated, but meters will rest in green.
November 12, 2014, ramp meters will start cycling (or metering) during Northbound PM peak time from 3:00pm to 8:00pm.
November 18, 2014, ramp meters will start cycling during Northbound AM peak time from 6:00am to 10:00am.
Most ramps will operate at “1 car per green” except for two connector ramps which will operate at “2 cars per green”. These connector on-ramps include the Westbound State Route 92 to Northbound U.S. Route 101 connector, and the Eastbound I-380 to Northbound U.S. 101 connector.
They include the following locations along northbound Route 101. Please note those in RED are located in South City:
Northbound Route 101 and SR 92 Westbound Diagonal
Northbound Route 101 and Fashion Island Drive
Northbound Route 101 and Kehoe Avenue

The Project
Caltrans and its project partners City County Association of Governments of San Mateo County (C/CAG), and Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) are working together on improving operations on U.S. Route 101 in San Mateo County. The improvements include the installation and activation of ramp meters at various locations.
Benefits
Ramp metering is a traffic management strategy using traffic signals and accompanying equipment and techniques to improve flow on the freeway system by managing the on-ramps. Caltrans expects the ramp metering system to improve safety and travel times during the peak periods of heavy traffic along the corridor.
Questions and feedback should be directed to CALTRANS via their hotline (510) 286-4531.

Hello, I am writing to you about a concern of mine regarding the metering lights at the Northbound 101 and I-380 Eastbound interchange. During the morning commute they are not in operation. Why??? They are in operation during the afternoon commute. The morning commute bottlenecks at this interchange causing traffic to backup all the way to SFO. This a frustrating experience for many commuters. This seems to be an inconsistent policy which is being implemented here. All the metering lights in the surrounding area are in operation and this interchange isn’t. The purpose is to control the flow of traffic and I fail to see the logic in its implementation. PLEAE turn them on, so we all can have a safe and smooth commute!! Thank you, Ron Raquel
