SSFUSD announces school closure for Thursday Dec 11 due to the impending storm

All schools within the South San Francisco Unified School District will be closed tomorrow due to anticipation of the impending storm. The Weather Forecast Office states a very strong confidence in this storm arriving with a punch including winds up to 20-30 miles an hour and gusts up to 40mph and rains up to 3 inches.

Maurice Goodman, President of the SSFUSD Board said “We do not take this decision lightly, we were well prepared to handle the physical conditions. Prior flooding concerns at Monte Verde had been addressed and our emergency contingent plans have been in place.”  The School Board voted unanimously to close the schools tomorrow during an emergency meeting held this evening. “We felt it was in the best interest of the students, especially our younger ones, to remain at home.”

The District also expressed a concern for teachers who must commute to work from outlying areas “We do not want to put our teachers at risk being on the roads commuting. Nor do we want our classes to be understaffed due to teachers not being able to make it in.”

Earlier today SSFUSD Superintendent Alejandro Hogan made public notice that students who might be kept home tomorrow would receive an excused absence due to the storm.

Currently there is no information if the Boys & Girls Club or City agencies will remain open.

UPDATE: 9:00PM Superintendent Hogan has issued a statement District Offices will remain open tomorrow and custodial staff will remain on site monitoring potential damage. Classes are expected to resume on Friday. We will update as more information becomes available.

UPDATE: 9:40PM FROM THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB Due to the approaching storm and the closing of South San Francisco Unified Schools, we will close tomorrow on Thursday Dec. 11th.

Too bad the same concern for teachers and students isn’t shared or had for office staff and custodians. God forbid one of those employees get hurt in an accident.

First kids have BACKpacks on wheels. Now they miss school because of rain? Times have changed.

this is no reason to shut school down. The year had already been cut short and Americans already tend less
School then a majority of countries. This is ridiculous.

Rich it might be “ridiculous” to you, however the saftey of my family and all the staff is much more important than 1 day of education. I grew up in the Bay Area and graduated from South City High. We lost 1 day of school after the Loma Prieta earthquake. We did JUST FINE! Now a days I’m in Reno, Nevada and the school district adds extra days for snow delays & closures. Maybe the school district should think about adding a day or so extra for reasons like this. We had to close schools for fires around here. My point is 1 day will not hurt anyone.

So I graduated from South City high just under 5 years ago and I remember the art teacher drove all the way from Vallejo every morning. 1 day really wont matter esp so close to finals. I remember around this time we spent the days studying for finals than actually doing class work.
