A South San Francisco resident responded to an advertisement on “Craig’s List” to purchase a Honda Accord for sale out of state. The entire transaction was conducted via email and text messages. The resident was informed to purchase Green Dot money cards to make the payment for the vehicle. The resident was then instructed to use “Google Wallet” to complete the purchase with the Green Dot cards. Once the transaction was complete, the victim received a confirmation number from Google Wallet, however; there was no vehicle actually for sale. Once the victim was aware of the scam, she attempted to contact the email address and cell phone number, but both were no longer valid.
Anyone with similar incidents, notify their respective local agencies of the scam.
