SSFPD Media Release: Green Dot / Prepaid Debit Card Fraud

On 01/05/201 5, a South San Francisco resident received an email and phone call from a male identifying himself to be a Loan Officer for a company by the name of GE Capital. The suspect convinced the victim into signing up for a loan by paying for various processing fees. The suspect suggested that the victim purchase various Green Dot MoneyPak’s (prepaid credit card) and provide him with the MoneyPak numbers. Over the period of three days, the resident sent the suspect twelve Green Dot MoneyPak’s totaling $1,415.65.

 

On O 1/08/2015, the resident became suspicious when the suspect stopped returning the residents calls. The resident reported the incident to the South San Francisco Police Department.

 

The suspect identified himself as Vincent Marshall from GE Capital and used an email address of .monevwJ ti na nc i t;r.com and a telephone number of (904) 2 l 2-0212. The telephone number appears to be from Jacksonville Beach Florida.

 

The South San Francisco Police Department urges citizens to be aware of these scams and avoid becoming a victim. Residents who have been victimized are urged to report the fraud to their local authorities.
