Basic supplies needed at Safe Harbor; Councilwoman Normandy leads Community Collection

Many of us are only a few paychecks away from our own housing crisis as rents in the area continue to sore. Since 1987 Safe Harbor in South San Francisco has provided shelter for up to 90 individuals, 18 and older, as an emergency homeless shelter on a first come base for those in San Mateo County. The shelter is operated in collaboration with the County of San Mateo Human Services Agency and they depend on help from our community to help fill in some basic needs.

Recently City Councilwoman Liza Normandy, along with Sergeant Adam Plank, spent the evening at Safe Harbor serving dinner. Normandy was inspired to continue help by creating  a community collection drive with the drop off point at the South San Francisco Police Department (33 Arroyo Drive) through March 6th.

The items needed include the following:

  •  Men/Women interview clothes; dress shirts, pants, ties, shoes…etc (New or Gently-used)
  • Toiletries of any type, especially shavers, deodorant and hairbrushes – (New)
  • Mens and womens underwear, especially extra large sizes – (New)
  • Feminine hygiene products such as tampons and pads
  • Adult undergarments/diapers for men and women all sizes– (New)
  • Socks of all sorts – (New or Gently-used)
  • Rain coats/slickers and umbrellas
  • Always bedding, sheets and blankets – (New or Gently-used)
  • Towels, towels, towels! – (New or Gently-used)
  • Bicycle locks

The ‘Wish List’ also included a Heavy duty Microwave (1), a Karaoke machine for fun night and a patio set for the porch area. “Even before the flyer was put out Costco on both ECR and Airport Blvd – donated (1) Heavy Duty Microphone and a DVD Player and our School Employees Chapter 197 – Donated a Large TV” Normandy reported “I am overwhelmed with our business partners and South San Francisco residents with their generosity and wanting make a difference in the lives of others.. I’m speechless.” Still on the wish list is a patio set for the porch area.
