Retirement Planning and Taxes from H&R Block

Get financially ready for retirement! The San Mateo District H&R Block tax professionals will host a Retirement Planning and Tax workshop. At the presentation you will learn about tax news, tips, and advice form the professionals that do it every day!

This free event will take place Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at South San Francisco Main Library.

 

Tabletop Freeplay – “Gaming Around the World”

Come to the library Saturday afternoon to play board games. Bring your favorites, or pick from our wide selection of titles for all ages at this family-friendly event. Because March is our Travel Month, we’ll also be sure to have a few fun travel-related games on hand.

This free event will take place on Saturday, March 7, 2015, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Library in our new upstairs programming space.

Author Talk: Peter Richardson

 

South San Francisco Public Library is excited to host Peter Richardson, author of No Simple Highway: A Cultural History of The Grateful Dead, for a discussion and book signing event.  Drawing on new research, interviews, and material from the Grateful Dead archives, No Simple Highway vividly recounts the Dead’s colorful history, adding new insight into everything from the acid tests to the band’s formation of their own record label to their massive late career success, while probing the riddle of the Dead’s vast and durable appeal.

 

This free event will take place Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Library, 840 West Orange Avenue, South San Francisco, CA.

Green Tortoise Adventure Travel

Please join us for Travel Month at the library.

 

We are pleased to host Green Tortoise Adventure Travel to talk about the history of the company, their sleeper coaches and the many places they travel, and stories from the road.

Green Tortoise Adventure Travel was founded in 1974, and now includes two hostels (one in San Francisco and one in Seattle) and a popular bus tour company which visits a wide variety of locations and features fun and adventurous activities: United States cross-country experiences, hiking and camping in Yosemite and the nation’s premier National Parks, and Baja, to name only a few.

Bay Area Travel Writers: Susan Alcorn

Please join us for Travel Month at the library.

 

We are pleased to host author, independent traveler, and Bay Area Travel Writer member Susan Alcorn, who will present a digital slideshow of her five-week, 500-mile trek along Spain’s ancient pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, the legendary burial place of the disciple St. James.

Come walk with Susan and her husband Ralph through the Pyrenees from France to Spain and then down through the fertile red soils of the Rioja wine-growing region, across the plains known as the Meseta, and into the lush green lands of Galicia. Susan will give you pointers for planning your own Camino adventure, including gear, expenses, lodging and what to expect about life on this centuries old trail.

Susan Alcorn is the author of Patagonia Chronicle: On Foot in Torres del Paine, Camino Chronicle: Walking to Santiago, and We’re in the Mountains Not over the Hill: Tales and Tips from Seasoned Women Backpackers.

This free event will take place Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Library.

Bay Area Travel Writers: Lisa Alpine

 

Please join us for Travel Month at the library.

 

We are pleased to host author, story-teller, and Bay Area Travel Writer member Lisa Alpine. Lisa is the author of  Wild Life: Travel Adventures of a Worldly Woman (the first-place winner of the 2014 North American Book Awards in the “Travel” category) and Exotic Life: Travel Tales of an Adventurous Woman (the first-place winner of the 2014 North American Book Awards in the “Memoir” category, and Best Women’s Adventure Memoir in the BAIPA Book Awards). She is the recipient of the Best Travel Story of the Year 2014 Solas Silver for “Fish Trader Ray”—included in Wild Life.

 

Lisa curates and hosts the 2014 and 2015 “Adventure Travel Stories with an All Star Line-up” literary series held at the Mill Valley Library and at Book Passage in California. Her stories appear in numerous anthologies, including Mambo Poa, Travelers’ Tales Best Travel Writing, BATW’s Travel Stories From Around the GlobeLonely Planet Tales From Nowhere, I Should Have Stayed HomeI Should Have Gone Home, and Hyenas Laughed at Me and Now I Know Why. She is the winner of the 2013 bronze medal under “Animal Encounter” for Trumpets of Warning; and the 2012 gold medal for Most Unforgettable Character in her story, Rada’s Bloom.

 

This free event will take place Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Library.

From Marshes to Air Travel Masses: The Origins and Development of San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

Please join us for Travel Month at the library.

Ranked the seventh busiest airport in the United States, San Francisco International Airport, or SFO, serves tens of millions of air-travel passengers yearly. From its humble origins as cow-pasture and marshland belonging to the Mills Estate, to major international airline hub and gateway to the Pacific and Asia, the history of SFO’s development will be presented by Dennis Sharp, the Curator of Aviation at SFO Museum, through words and images. The presentation will also include an overview of SFO’s exhibition program, SFO Museum.

This free event will take place Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at the South San Francisco Municipal Services Building, located at 33 Arroyo Drive.
