A new high school equivalency test for students aged 18 and over is being used by the South San Francisco Unified School District, according to Superintendent Alejandro Hogan.
The HiSET program is a more accessible and cheaper alternative to the General Educational Development (GED) test. Successful completion of the HiSET standards _ a comprehensive set of five examinations in reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies _ results in a California state certificate of high school equivalency, the same validation obtained via the GED.
The HiSET program, however, costs a total of $70 (including a $20 state fee), versus $120 for the GED, and can be taken by computer or by pencil and paper. GED testing currently is available only online.
Maurice Goodman, clerk of the District Board of Trustees, said HiSET “will better serve our students and community.”
The board members were briefed on the new adult testing program by District Alternative Education Principal Mike Coyne during their Feb. 12 meeting.
