South San Francisco, CA April 20, 2015 Submitted by SSFPD
On 04-17-15, a South San Francisco Police Officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for an equipment violation. The driver, Daniel Louis Hunt, was found to be driving with a suspended driver’s license. Hunt’s license was suspended due to two previous D.U.I. convictions. Hunt was also found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Hunt was placed under arrest for 14601.l(a) VC (driving with a suspended license), l1377(a) H&S (possession of methamphetamine), and 11364.1 H&S (possession of drug paraphernalia). Hunt’s vehicle was towed and impounded on a 30 day impound for driving with the suspended license.
The South San Francisco Police Department continues its partnership with the California Department of Motor Vehicles in the “DUI Hot List” program. This is a program that identifies the “worst of the worst” drivers who have multiple two-point driving convictions, multiple DUI convictions, and/or multiple convictions for driving with a suspended driver’s license. Hunt was one of the drivers on the DUI Hot list.
The South San Francisco Police Department disseminates the DUI Hot list to all traffic and patrol officers. In addition, throughout the year, specially-trained officers conduct undercover surveillance operations targeting known repeat offenders by watching their home or workplace. Offenders caught driving are subject to immediate arrest for driving on a suspended license and can also be subject to additional DMV sanctions and criminal charges.
Studies and research conducted by the DMV shows a staggering 75% of drivers who are convicted of DUI continue to drive despite having their drivers licenses suspended or revoked. Repeat DUI offenders in California are involved in 24% of fatal DUI crashes and 63% of injury DUI crashes. These statistics show why programs like the DUI Hot List are important in our efforts to reduce these numbers.
