South San Francisco, CA      May 12, 2015      Submitted by SSFPD SSFPD logo color

As part of its ongoing efforts to increase traffic safety and reduce traffic collisions, officers from the South San Francisco Police Department hit the streets on Monday May 11th looking for speeders.

Specially-trained officers conducted speed enforcement on El Camino Real, Sister Cities Boulevard, and Westborough Boulevard. All of these streets are major arterial roadways with significant speed related collision rates. Over the last few years, drivers traveling at unsafe speeds were the most common primary collision factor (cause of the traffic collision) in South San Francisco.

Officers were equipped with high-tech Lidar devices that use an infrared laser to accurately measure a vehicle’s speed and distance. Officers handed out a total of 54 speeding citations in the one day crackdown. One driver was cited for driving at 71 MPH in a posted 40 MPH zone (31 miles per hour over the limit) on Sister Cities Boulevard and another driver was cited for driving at 69 MPH in a posted 40 MPH zone (29 MPH over the limit) on El Camino Real.

During the enforcement operation, officers stopped (S) Mauro Munoz Hernandez of San Francisco. Hernandez was speeding at more than double the speed limit at 81 miles-per-hour in the 40 miles-per hour zone on Sister Cities Boulevard . Hernandez was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and he was arrested for 23152(a) CVC for driving under the influence of alcohol. Hernandez’ blood-alcohol level was found to be .13% (over 1.5 times the legal limit). Lieutenant Keith Wall

stated, “Thanks to this special traffic enforcement operation, a dangerous and potentially deadly driver was removed from our roadways.”

This operation was just another in many ongoing traffic safety operations scheduled to be conducted throughout the rest of this year and next year. The goal of these operations is to get drivers to slow down, be aware, and be safe. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
