Teacher Appreciation Week Brings Memories of Parkway’s Mr Jex

South San Francisco, CA           May 6, 2015

UPDATE 10/22/2018: Kimberly Nunes David Carelli has shared
“I called to arrange a time to visit today and was told that he passed away yesterday. Rest in Aloha Mr. Jex
He was and is my favorite teacher♡.”

While we appreciation our teachers all year long, May 4 through the 8th has been declared Teacher Appreciation Week. Congresswoman Jackie Speier, being an alumni of Parkway Junior High School in South San Francisco, posted a photo of her along side Mr. Jex on her Facebook page which we shared onto ESC’s Facebook page. Below are shared memories from some former students who were inspired by Mr. Jex.

To all of our teachers we say thank you! What teachers inspired you?

Congresswoman Jackie Speier shared this on her Facebook page; My middle school teacher Mr. Jex appointed me editor in chief of the school newspaper at Parkway Heights Middle. He called me "chief" and for the first time in my life I had a leadership position and a sense that I could be a leader. It all started with a teacher....in my case, Mr. Jex. Did you have a teacher who profoundly influenced your life? Photo: Jackie Speier

Mr. Jex was one of the best teachers I ever had. I was part of his Journalism class and spent many days after school helping him put together the newspaper. He also taught us greek roots, which has helped me all through life. I will never forget this amazing manl!!!

Mister Jex taught me how to type and I loved him for that, but the one time I had detention, yup it was with Mister Jex. The man was a beast during detention. Either way, he was a hell of a teacher and mentor as long as you did not have to suffer through detention! Please get better soon sir.
Aloha,

Dave

If I had to name the one teacher who made the biggest impact on my career, it was undoubtedly Mr. Jex. I had him for homeroom, English and Journalism for 7th and 8th grade. My career depended on my ability to read, write and edit executive and legal documents. Without the strong basis in English and in Copy-an- Proof Editing on the “Panther Scream,” I would not have been nearly as successful in my career. I often think of him and of how much he influenced my life and my career. I just hope and pray that he is aware of how many of his students achieved successful careers and gained confidence in themselves because of his teaching methods and his guidance. He was truly an amazing teacher and I wish him well for as long as he is still with us. Sincerely, Margie Heath Miramontes (One of his Journalism Pin recipients.)

Back in 1977-1978 I had Mr. Jex for an English teacher at Parkway Junior High. I always appreciated that he’d start class by having us write down what were thinking, and that he encouraged us to read. I still remember the displays of paperback books that he’d encourage us to pick from when we needed a book to read. His classroom was always open after school for kids to visit and hang out…and he’d usually have something that we could help with: collating the mimeographed copies of handouts for his classes, resupplying the book racks, or just being there with the other kids and talking, reading, writing…. He’s one of my favorite teachers, and someone who helped me to have faith in myself and my abilities. He was one of the foundational adults in my life when I was a teenager. And I have never forgotten him being there when kids drifted into his classroom after school.

I had a lovely chat with E Jex after an absence of 5 years and this on the phone and he remembered me. I was so touched and he remembered so many things. I moved to Europe 40 years ago to learn some languages and ended up staying and we talked about his time in Germany. I feel bad as I should write him…a book, he would love it.
We gossiped too…so wonderful to know that one of my most influential teachers is well and has an iron memory like me.
I work as a tour guide in Rome, the first American male to get the certification here. I owe a lot to those like Jex and Hahnel (sp) who not only taught history but had so many insights into historical moments. Anyway one day in the group put together for me comes an old Parkway alumnus and his alumna wife…Larry Miramontes!

Ah Parkway, we boys used to hide in the fog first period when told to run laps around the field.
