Cookin’ the Market

Please join us in welcoming Cookin’ the Market’s Chef Mario. Chef Mario will be performing a cooking demonstration and providing us with healthy cooking tips, and delicious recipes to try and share.

Cookin’ the Market is a program focusing on creating quick, nutritious meals using fresh, seasonal, locally-grown ingredients. Cookin’ the Market is a program of the Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market Association (PCFMA), a not-for-profit organization that operates Certified Farmers’ Markets in the San Francisco Bay Area. PCFMA’s mission is to establish and operate community-supported certified farmers’ markets that provide: viable economic outlets for California farmers and food producers, local access to farm fresh products, support for local businesses, and education concerning food and sustainable agriculture.

This free event will take place Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the South San Francisco Main Library.

 

Basic Caregiving

Learn the basics of caregiving. In this program lead by Always Best Care Senior Services, you will take home strategies, tips, and advice on how to perform the best possible caregiving and companionship to your loved ones. We will discuss specific issues of concern, scenarios you may face in day-to-day caregiving, or caregiving from a distance. You will also learn of the importance of taking care of your own needs and how to help have a more positive, less stressful caregiver experience.Always Best Care Senior Services has served to help families with non-medical in-home care and assisted living placement since 1966. We welcome their knowledge and experience.

This free event will take place Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Library.

Miemode Crew Visits the Library

 Please join us for a program in conjunction with our LibLab MakerSpace. Founder and CEO Ginger Kong and her team are working on innovative ways to make learning fun and are planning to start a pilot program to bring virtual reality into classrooms.  Using Miemode’s M8D VR Headset, teachers can transport their students on a fun virtual field trip to any destination that has a VR video.  Students can check out the Great Wall of China or learn about the Mona Lisa painting at the Louvre Museum without leaving the classroom.

Located in San Francisco Bay Area, California, Miemode are specialists in the design of entertainment software and emerging leaders in the digital realm of iOS and Android game app design and product development.  Miemode recently received Special Recognition for their support with Jobs for Youth program.

Tech Time @ SSFPL – Librarian-Led Technology Classes

In September, we’re focusing largely on our database offerings, with an additional course on iPads (which are available for in-library use at the Main Library). All classes are at the Main Library

  • Learn the tips and tricks and best usage practices of the iPads with a refresher “iPad 101” course on Wednesday, September 9 at 2:00 p.m.
  • The library now offers free, online, instructor-led classes with Gale Courses! Come learn how to register and see the wide variety of classes offered on Monday, September 14 at 4:00 p.m.
  • AtoZdatabases is an incredible resource for job searchers and small business owners. Learn how this valuable library resource can help you find a job, grow your small business, identify potential clients, set up and maintain an email list, and so much more on Wednesday, September 16 at 2:00 p.m.
  • Another recent addition to our database collection is the beautiful and extensive National Geographic back catalogues, with both the National Geographic Virtual Library, and National Geographic Kids. With videos, and image search function, and the magazine archive from 1888 to present, there is an overwhelming amount of content available to our patrons. Learn more on Monday, September 28 at 11:00 a.m.

Textile Tuesdays

The South San Francisco Public Library is excited to announce our new sewing lab. In connection with our LibLab MakerSpace we are pleased to share this great new resource that includes five Singer 7258 Stylist Award-Winning 100-Stitch Computerized Sewing Machines, a Brother 400 Embroidery Machine, and a Brother 1034D 4 Thread Serger. In our first class, September 1st, we will start to gain an understanding of our machines and what they do, learn some basic functions and instructions, and make eye pillows that you can take home.

Want to personalize your work with custom embroidery? In our second Textile Tuesdays class, September 8th, participants will watch an embroidery demonstration on our new Brother 400 embroidery machine. Fun and easy to use, the Brother 400 allows the user to both download designs from the internet and access its built-in set of embroidery patterns.

On Tuesdays September 15th and 22nd, we will offer certification and open sewing lab. We will train you on using our machines and award you with a certificate, which will allow you to book time to use our machines on your own.

This free event will take place Tuesdays, September 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd, 11:30 to 2:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Library in our auditorium.

 

Author Talk: Kitchen Creamery: Making Yogurt, Butter, and Cheese at Home by Louella Hill

Please join us in welcoming Louella Hill, The San Francisco Milk Maid, in presenting her new book, Kitchen Creamery: Making Yogurt, Butter, and Cheese at Home. Medicare and You

Join us for our continuing Medicare program. We will be featuring a four-part series presented by HICAP (Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program). At each program an authorized counselors will discuss the different sections of Medicare benefits.

HICAP (the Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program) provides free and objective information and counseling about Medicare. Volunteer counselors can help you understand your specific rights and health care options. HICAP also offers free educational presentations to groups of Medicare beneficiaries, their families and/or providers on a variety of Medicare and other health insurance related topics.
