South San Francisco, CA August 10, 2015 Submitted by SSFPD
On Thursday, August 6, 2015 at approximately 2:30pm, the South San Francisco Police responded to a report of gunshots in the area of Chestnut and Grand Avenue. Shortly after that report, a 29-year old mechanic from San Mateo showed up at Seton Medical Center in Daly City with a non-fatal gunshot wound to his head.
A subsequent police investigation determined that the mechanic (victim) was the passenger in a vehicle being driven by two suspected San Bruno gang members. The three were together because the victim was going to inspect a vehicle for repairs. While the three were driving in South San Francisco, a male subject on foot near Chestnut and Oak Avenues fired at them. The victim was able to provide a description of the male shooter to police.
On Friday, August 7, 2015 at approximately 6:30pm, officers of the San Mateo County gang force noticed a male subject matching the description provided by the victim, walking in the area of Willow Avenue and Marcie Circle in South San Francisco, which is close to where the Thursday shooting took place. Officers attempted to speak to the male, at which time he ran and discarded a loaded firearm. The firearm was recovered and is suspected to be the firearm used in Thursday’s shooting. A police perimeter was established and the male was located shortly after.
He was taken into custody and is identified as Daly City resident, Jose Antonio Nava. Nava previously resided in South San Francisco and has affiliation with a known criminal street gang. Nava is allegedly responsible for the shooting and was booked into the San Mateo County jail on charges including, but not limited to attempted murder, possession of a loaded firearm, participating in a criminal street gang, and resisting/obstructing/delaying a peace officer.
The motive for the shooting is still being investigated, but appears to be gang-related at this time. The two suspected San Bruno gang members are believed to be the intended targets.
Anybody with information related to this investigation is encouraged to contact the South San Francisco Police Criminal Investigation Bureau at (650) 877-8910 or on the anonymous TIP line at (650) 952-2244.
