Upcoming Adult Programs in October:

 

  •         Farmers’ Market Outreach

South San Francisco Public Library will be popping up at the Farmers’ Market this fall! Stop by our booth to sign up for a library card and visit our bookmobile. Saturday, October 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Farmers’ Market at Orange Memorial Park.

 

 

Interested in finding free eBooks or curious about what’s happening with the Internet Archive? If so, then join the South San Francisco Public Library for an introduction to the Internet Archive and Open Library with Internet Archive librarian and archivist Michelle Krasowski.  The Internet Archive was founded in San Francisco in 1996 with the goal of preserving the internet and digital -born materials to ensure continued access into the future. Currently, over 8,000,000 fully accessible, free eBooks can be accessed via the Internet Archive and Open Library. During her presentation, Michelle Krasowski will describe ongoing projects at the Internet Archive, demonstrate how to access books and other digital resources, and teach attendees how to sign up for a free virtual library card.   •         Better Choices, Better Health: A Six-Part Series with HealthTrust MORE INFO CLICK HERE

Whether you have been recently diagnosed with a chronic condition such as diabetes, high cholesterol, arthritis, or depression or you are looking to better manage a preexisting condition, you are welcome to attend the Better Choices, Better Health workshop series at the South San Francisco Public Library. These six free workshops on managing chronic health conditions will be presented by the HealthTrust, a Silicon Valley organization that is working to make this the healthiest region in America. Sunday, October 4, 18, 25 and Sunday, November 1, 8, and 22 at 2:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Library.

 

The Library Talks brings your favorite authors to your library via live video conferencing. Join South San Francisco Public Library for a lively virtual author talk with Tamora Pierce. Pierce is most well-known for authoring popular fantasy and fiction novels for teenagers. In 2013, she was awarded the Margaret A. Edwards Award for her tetralogies Song of Lioness and Protector of the Small.  Participants will be able to listen in to the virtual author talk and interact with Tamora Pierce during a question and answer session. Tuesday, October 13 at 6:30 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Library.

 

Join South San Francisco Public Library for a conversation with the Ghost Explorers team of paranormal investigators just in time for Halloween. Hear about how investigations are conducted and learn how to separate fact from fiction. Thursday, October 15 at 6:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Library.

 

 

Celebrate Filipino-American Heritage Month with us and learn how to make savory and sweet lumpia with our very own librarian Anna Taloma. In this family-friendly event you will learn how to create a delicious lumpia filling, get hands-on instruction on how to wrap and cook your lumpia – and, of course, you will also get the chance to sample what we make. Friday, October 16 at 3:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Library.

 

 

Please join the South San Francisco Public Library in a family fun Halloween themed cookie decorating party. South San Francisco’s own Chef Ava Romero will lead families in a holiday cookie decorating workshop and demonstration, which will be more sweet than spooky. All ages are welcome.   •         Author Talk: Oliver Wang, Legions of Boom: Filipino American Mobile DJ Crews in the SF Bay Area MORE INFO CLICK HERE

 

Our celebration of Filipino American Heritage Month continues with a conversation with Oliver Wang, Associate Professor of Sociology at CSU Long Beach and contributor to NPR, Vibe, the Los Angeles Times, Oakland Tribune, and other publications. He will be talking about his latest book Legions of Boom: Filipino American Mobile DJ Crews in the San Francisco Bay Area. Published by Duke University Press, Legions of Boom details the Filipino American mobile DJ crews, such as Ultimate Creations, Spintronix, and Images, Inc., which rocked dance floors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area from the late 1970s through the mid-1990s. Wang, noted music and pop culture writer and scholar, chronicles this remarkable scene that eventually became the cradle for turntablism. Saturday, October 17 at 2:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Library.

 

 

 

Concerned about becoming a victim of fraud? Communications specialist Zack McDowel from the Better Business Bureau of San Francisco Bay Area and Northern Coastal California will be presenting a talk investment scam at the South San Francisco Public Library. This presentation’s aim is to help participants learn to better protect themselves from scams and fraud. In our seminar we will discuss who is at risk for investment scams, common tactics used by fraudsters, and red flags to be aware of. Thursday, October 22 at 6:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Library.

 

 

  •         Understanding Medicare: A Four-Part Series with the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program MORE INFO CLICK HERE

 

HICAP (the Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program) provides free and objective information and counseling about Medicare. Volunteer counselors can help you understand your specific rights and health care options. HICAP also offers free educational presentations to groups of Medicare beneficiaries, their families and/or providers on a variety of Medicare and other health insurance related topics. Saturday, October 24 at 2:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Library.

 

  •         Kristian Kabuay, Artist, Documentary Filmmaker, and Calligraphy Artist

Celebrate Filipino-American Heritage Month with us as we learn about Kristian Kabuay’s unique calligraphy style. Using a combination of ancient Philippine scripts, Baybayin, and modern street art techniques, Kristian is working to resurrect this writing style and share his culture with people around the world. Born in the Philippines and raised in the Bay Area, Kristian has a passion for calligraphy, graffiti, indigenous culture, technology, and Asian writing systems. He lectures and gives live demonstrations of his unique performance style at universities and museums around the world. Kristian currently lives in San Francisco. Thursday, October 29 at 6:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Library.

 

 

Tech Time Meets MakerSpace – LibLab Demonstrations MORE INFO CLICK HERE

In October, we’re demonstrating some of fun MakerSpace equipment. All classes are at the Main Library:

  •         Check out a demonstration of our 3D printers on Friday, October 2 at 4:00 p.m.
  •         Come see our embroidery machine in action on Friday, October 9 at 4:00 p.m.
  •         The library now owns 3Doodlers, 3D printing pens! Learn how to use them on Friday, October 23 at 4:00 p.m.
  •         Our Silhouette CAMEO is a cutting machine! Learn how to create stencils, decals, and other items on Friday, October 30 at 4:00 p.m.

 

LibLab MakerSpace Open Hours

We recently unveiled LibLab, the new MakerSpace at the Main Library, a place where patrons of all ages can learn modern science and technology skills. We have a high-end design computer with a range of creative software, including the entire Adobe Creative, ProTools, and SketchUp; two Ultimaker 3D printers and one Makerbot Digitizer (3D scanner); ten (Windows OS) laptops and Arduino kits; and fifteen iPads. We are also building a textile workstation, including five sewing machines, one programmable computerized embroidery machine, a serger, and various other supplies.

Equipment is available by reservation most weekdays, Monday through Friday, 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The equipment can be reserved, free of charge, at libcal.ssf.net

 

Our textile workshops, which began in September, continue – albeit not on Tuesdays. Please join us for sewing sessions on the following dates:

  •         Saturday, October 3 at 11:00 a.m. for an open sewing session.
  •         Thursday, October 8 at 6:00 p.m. for a hand embroidery demonstration.
  •         Sunday, October 18 at 2:00 p.m. for a machine embroidery demonstration.
  •         Saturday, October 24 at 11:00 a.m. for an open sewing session.
