Etiquette Reminder for Everything South City Commenters

South San Francisco, CA                 October 28, 2015

Everything South City Friends-Etiquette Reminder:

We don’t have lots of rules & stuff about posting or commenting on our FB/ Twitter/ or Website however we are BIG on reminding our neighbors to act…. well neighborly.

We’ve had many complaints the past two weeks about comments that have come across as snarky, negative, better-than-you, mean spirited, confrontational, and so forth – which is completely opposite of why we exist…

Our mission is to hook us locals up with news & views from other locals

To those who have felt slighted, we apologize if comments were not monitored better. It’s a balancing act, when to step in and when to just let people express themselves because we can learn a lot about our neighbors just from listening.
We don’t need to agree with them, rather come away with ‘Ah!! So that’s how they think’.

And we also need to be respectful not to berate others who don’t accept our points of view – ♪ let it go, ♪♪ let it go, let it go ♪ ♫!

Please remember we’re all just trying to get by as best we can & if we can stop & help each other – so much the better.

If not, let’s just walk on by….. No harm, no foul….

To Your Neighbor and Madame A,

I’m new here and don’t have any history of past comments, so I’m curious to know, based on this thread of comments, specifically, what was objectionable with what Susan Freeman wrote?

Thanks!

Everyone is entitled to their respectful opinion. Just because its not Yours, does not mean it does not carries merit to others. The “Freedom of the Press” applies to All. Whether its your opinion your not. From the looks of this community paper, it just looks only One Sided, Whick is not the true sense of journalism and freedom of the press. Maybe my new website coming up called “Everything South Silly, will be a Welcome Page of Freedom of Press, where everyone can comment tastefully and will not be judge, if it does not fit there personal liking.

Never have I been abhorrent, rude, or disrespectful. Always, have I insisted we attacking only problems not people, Mina. And we certainly should never break the law. I’ve even invited you into my own home time and again. The invitation remains open for reasoned, respectful, open, honest, and direct communication. Have a good day.

Susan,

You’re guilty of all that rubbish you’re applying to everyone else.

Enough said. I really don’t even read your long pointless winded responses.

Thank you so much for posting this reminder, as people have been far too rude and disrespectful, attacking people rather than problems, private lives rather than policies. This is especially true of those hiding behind avatars and pseudonyms. It is a most cowardly act. Undoubtedly as new technologies continue to evolve, new ways to communicate and connect online will be developed— and as these innovations emerge, new tactics for the promulgation of hatred will also appear.

The ways in which the Internet is being used to disseminate personal attacks, ill intentions, and negative attitudes are astounding, varied, and continually multiplying. We must I think disagreement and debate are good things. I think we are well served when different viewpoints are presented and then each side competes vigorously but fairly, honestly, and respectfully to recruit voters to their side.

However, I am disturbed by the increase in the demonization that has been presented in this ballot measure campaign. The political debate, particularly among those who hide behind these avatars and pseudonyms, has resulted in masses of community members who fall prey to such misleading and bombastic propaganda.

As stated before, when disagreements activate the psychology of good-versus-evil, it becomes more difficult to reach agreements that meet each side’s key interests; reasoning becomes far less responsive to facts, and combatants begin to believe that the ends justify the means. This is never acceptable. While it is certainly permissible to attack problems, it is never permissible to attack people.

When that happens, partisans are more willing to break laws, play dirty tricks, lie, and ruin the personal lives of their opponents — all in the service of what they think is a good cause. Good people are discouraged from entering politics and public service. Good public servants are driven out of office. And by all means — it is never permissible to break the law in an effort to win. We must check facts. make our own personal decisions, and give merit to another’s stand.
