San Mateo County to Remember Orlando Shooting Victims With Vigil This Friday

South San Francisco, CA   June 17, 2016

The County of San Mateo joins the world in mourning the 49 lives lost and dozens other injured in the June 11 Orlando nightclub shooting and will hold a community vigil Friday to commemorate the victims and show solidarity against homophobia, hate of every kind and gun violence.

The Board of Supervisors and the County are joined in hosting this vigil with members of its Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Commission and the Pride Initiative. All are welcome to attend.

“This tragedy is a reminder that there is still a lot of work to be done to create communities that are inclusive, equitable and safe. As we celebrate LGBTQ month this June, we are mindful that many individuals and families remain isolated and live in fear for their safety,” said Jei Africa of the Health System’s Office of Diversity and Equity and a member of the LGBTQ Commission.
