Peninsula Clean Energy Now the Official Electricity Service Provider for San Mateo County

Redwood City, CA – Peninsula Clean Energy is ushering in an exciting era of sustainability in San Mateo County as the new official electricity service provider for residents and businesses. Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE) officially began service on October 3, 2016, delivering cleaner electricity at lower rates compared to PG&E.

“Local residents and businesses will now have the opportunity to purchase greener energy at rates below PG&E’s, “ said Supervisor Dave Pine. “With PCE, San Mateo County rate payers can substantially reduce their carbon emissions while enjoying lower energy costs.”

Beyond the source of electricity, customers will not experience any noticeable changes as they seamlessly transition to Peninsula Clean Energy because enrollment is automatic. Peninsula Clean Energy will source cleaner electricity from renewable sources, while PG&E continues to deliver the electricity over existing power lines and handle billing and service needs. All accounts will be automatically enrolled in ECOplus, the default option with a minimum of 50 percent of the electricity sourced from renewables and 75 percent carbon-free. ECOplus rates are 5 percent below PG&E’s rates for electric generation. Customers can choose to “opt-up” to ECO100 and purchase 100 percent renewable and carbon-free electricity at a slight premium. Currently, over 270 individual customers and over 630 municipal accounts have already opted- up to ECO100.

“We’re excited to launch Peninsula Clean Energy and give San Mateo County residents and businesses the opportunity to combat climate change and substantially reduce San Mateo County’s carbon footprint,” said CEO Jan Pepper.

The initial customer enrollment includes approximately 20 percent of San Mateo County residents as well as all small to medium sized businesses and municipal accounts. The first enrollment group was based on randomly selected neighborhoods to ensure an equitable countywide process. Customers outside of the initial enrollment areas interested in being among the first to receive Peninsula Clean Energy service can be included in the first phase by becoming an Early Adopter, regardless of their scheduled enrollment group. More than 325 customers have signed up as Early Adopters prior to the official launch. All enrollment will continue through spring of 2017.

Peninsula Clean Energy has sourced its initial supply of clean energy for the first enrollment phase and issued a request for proposal on October 6, 2016 to procure clean energy sources that will accommodate more customers into its service in the spring of 2017. Clean energy consumption reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which helps combat climate change. Local control programs like Peninsula Clean Energy can also provide economic benefits to by reinvesting earnings into the community that they serve.
