South San Francisco, CA October 29, 2016 Shared by a proud parent, KPIX News COOL SCHOOL Segment
South San Francisco 3rd graders from Spruce Elementary School were featured on KPIX News segment ‘COOL SCHOOL’ this past week as the students take on a project that brings them outdoors and into the real world. For 2 hours a week 25 students in Ms. Makovkin and Mrs. Del Bianca’s classes nurture their garden, weeding, planting, watering and learning about new foods like basil and cilantro. And bugs. And teamwork.
“Everyone is good at something in the garden” Mrs Del Bianco said “And the self confidence they gain in the garden flows back into the classroom.” The students chart the progress on computers learning mathematical calcuations while also learning that everything doesn’t come right away “You need to nurture something to make it grow.” Ms Makovkin said.
Our community is very fortunate to have teachers like Ms. Makovkin and Mrs Del Bianco who nurture our students, helping them to grow as well.
