Wish List Fulfilled for Ms. Lents’ Class at Parkway Heights Middle School

South San Francisco, CA    January 3, 2017

Today Everything South City received a wonderful follow up notice from Ms Lents, one of our teachers at Parkway Heights Middle School. At the beginning of the school year, Ms. Lents along with many other teachers, partnered with DonorsChoose.org with the hope needed supplies for her 6th – 8th grade students would be realized. And they have, thanks to Genentech who has matched funds for ALL our teacher’s projects, up to $500, in support of their FutureLab program with our SSF Schools. Everything South City is only one entity who has stepped up to help with our small donation to Ms. Lents’ list, which was matched by Genentech.

While we wish we could donate to every cause, we know every little bit can help and encourage those in our community to join in! Please bookmark this link and check it often to find requests by others who need, and depend on, community help to educate our youth. It really does take a village!

Below is the wonderful news we received:

Dear Everything South City,

Thank you so much for your generous donations. The laptops are a great addition to my classroom, and my students are very thankful. Many of my students do not have access to a computer at home, so it is exciting for me to see them learning and developing an important skill in our technologically advancing world.

Many of my students have a negative attitude toward math, so engaging, differentiated instruction is key for their learning. They are always excited to get a break from pencil-and-paper work to go on the computers. While our school has a computer lab, it is shared among the whole school and having the laptops in our room makes them much more accessible. Students love to play math games online, use Khan Academy for review videos and practice (rather than worksheets!), and engage in class-wide Desmos (a graphing website) exploration experiments and activities.

Having these laptops available is useful to more advanced students seeking an extra challenge after finishing regular activities early, as well as struggling students who need more feedback or more of a visual guide. Your donations will certainly continue to help several students in years to come!

With gratitude,
Ms. Lents

A Technologically Interactive Classroom

My students need 3 laptops and a mobile whiteboard to achieve greatness.
My Students

Students need diverse, engaging, and differentiated activities to learn the difficult concepts of mathematics.

I teach at a Title I school where over 70% receive free or reduced lunch, and over 80% are English language learners.
They are vibrant and full of curiosity about life and growing up, yet confused and struggling to make it through their adolescent years. My classes are made up of about 70% Hispanic students. The rest is made up of Filipino and white. Most speak a second language at home. Despite these added challenges to growing up, they try their very best every day to learn something new.

My Project

I requested 3 laptops and a mobile whiteboard to promote engagement in math. With the laptops, students can play online math games, or get some practice on Khan Academy, or do an interactive lesson on Desmos.com. The mobile whiteboard allows for student presentations, and more interactive group projects.

Students love the extra interactivity that you can’t get with just a pencil and paper, and they learn just how useful technology can be.
Many of my students do not have computer access at home, and only some have a smartphone. The laptops will give them much needed experience using this kind of technology! Doing work on a computer often gives students immediate feedback on their progress, so they do not have to wait for me, which increases their self reliance and boosts confidence. It is also a huge help to give students more visuals in mathematics, especially English language learners. I just wish I could have a class set!
