AB 84 would move California Presidential Primary Election to Super Tuesday in 2020
Sacramento – Today, AB 84, Assembly Speaker pro Tempore Kevin Mullin’s bill which would move California’s presidential primary to early March in 2020, passed out of the Assembly Elections and Redistricting Committee on a 6 – 1 vote with bi-partisan support.
“It’s time to Make California Count in presidential primary elections. AB 84 will do just that,” Mullin stated. “There is broad interest in giving California voters a greater voice in choosing presidential candidates. I introduced AB 84 in January and have received positive bi-partisan feedback, since this bill benefits all California voters regardless of party affiliation.”
Moving California’s primary election to “Super Tuesday,” in presidential election years would give voters a prominent voice at a time when candidates are experiencing their first test of national strength and viability.
One out of eight US voters lives in California. California is home to one of the largest and most diverse populations in America. California is the sixth largest economy in the world. Under our current June primary schedule, California was largely a non-factor in selecting presidential candidates.
In 2016, the presidential nominees were all but official by the time California held its June primary, despite that 2016 marked an unprecedented number of candidates.
“Voter empowerment and engagement has been and continues to be a cornerstone of my legislative agenda,” Mullin said. “Voters tend to be more engaged in the process when there is a candidate or initiative they are passionate about. Making California part of the early presidential primary process, gives voters a more prominent voice. AB 84 would make Make CA Count. “
