“Congratulations to the SSF CERT class that graduated Tuesday evening especially my husband Steve Carey” writes proud wife Debbie Carey as she shares this photo on our Facebook page.
The South San Francisco Community Emergency Response Team is made up of neighbors who volunteer their time training to be at the ready when a disaster strikes our area, to aid other neighbors as an extension of our emergency response and they work under the umbrella of our Fire Department. There is a position to everyone in this friendly group, from physical demands to administrative needs to HAM operators. What is CERT and how do I join?Following a major disaster, emergency services will be overwhelmed by the volume of calls for assistance to the community. A multitude of contributing factors will prevent people from accessing the emergency services they have come to expect. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training provides the tools necessary for community group leaders and fellow citizens to provide assistance to themselves, families, and neighbors in the event of a disaster. CERT will operate within their neighborhoods, under direction of the Fire Department, to provide that assistance until trained professionals can arrive.
The South San Francisco Fire Department is conducting ongoing CERT training for its citizens with classes being offered twice during the year. The Course will consist of five 3-4 hour sessions and two eight-hour sessions, one session per week. The six week course will cover the following topics:
- Disaster preparedness
- Fire safety and suppression
- Disaster medical operations
- Light search and rescue operations
- Disaster psychology and team organization
- CPR and First Aid certification
- Course review and disaster simulation
HAM operators are also part of this program
