Residential Development in South San Francisco

South San Francisco, CA  March 27, 2018

With cranes hovering above us and traffic congestion in front and behind us, many South City residents are saying Enough is Enough! Long time residents believe this growth is too much at one time and continue to ask City officials to slow down the development that is changing the face, and the heart, of our City. While it is understood this is a regional issue, it is up to local residents to set the tone of the place they call home, and their voices are rising up. Quality of life is negatively being impacted to accommodate new comers to the booming biotech while many neighbors are moving away.  Too many residents say they are feeling they are being pushed out from their home and their community that they have helped create.

A protest is planned for Wednesday evening at the City Council Chambers 33 Arroyo Drive South San Francisco at 6:00 PM as the Council picks which firm will develop a 12 story 820+/- unit monstrosity planned for the geographical center of town. This area off of El Camino Real on Mission Road will also be home to the City’s ‘Civic Center’ which is to house a new police station, recreation center, library and administrative offices. South City Car Wash will soon disappear after 60+ years of serving our residents and visitors and a 6 story high rise to house 172 units will take the place of this current one story business.

South San Francisco had been committed to keeping high rises in the business area of town, east of Highway 101.  Yet with this recent wave of gentrification high rises are dotting our downtown and sprawling out from there, with new buildings popping up vying for air space blocking views of iconic landmarks that have given South City their identity. Now officials are seeking to add a 12 story development in the center of our City.

Below are only some of the developments in the pipeline for South City, not included are commercial projects, the new civic center, or other developments that are still being vetted by officials. For more info on each of these projects  CLICK HERE.

I believe we need new housing. Bay Area has become expensive for new talent to come in. People cannot afford single family housing and apartments are the way to go from now on. It will help bring a thriving community of younger generation. This is not a retirement community – it is in the center of a bustling economy with potential for great growth. Bringing in the younger generation and improving public transport is the only way to grow. We need housing and the only way it’ll work is being in someone’s backyard. I am willing to bear the traffic if the city improves other amenities.

Waste of time going to the meetings! They already have decided to do these horrible changes to our city! Family been here since 1956, went to schools here, and raised my sons here. For many years, the new Millennials and new council with all these horrible changes they have brought to our city have made it hard to watch. They shouldn’t get rid of the elders, because they are the ones who appreciate SSF history. We are not a City like SF we shouldn’t have all this housing for more ppl to crowd our city! They tear down our schools and build more housing! What the new millennials aren’t going to have kids, or are they going to learn in space, like they have made our parks (not worthy for our young kids!) Too many ppl moving to SSF. STOP BUILDING STOP BUILDING LET THE HOME GROWN PPL OF SSF SPEAK…. DON’T LET THE COUNCIL MAKE THESE DECISIONS, LIKE THEY DO EVERYTHING W/O INVOLVING AND HEARING OUR SAY. WE ARE NOT A METROPOLITAN CITY, WE ARE A SUBURB AND SHOULD STAY THAT WAY, SAVE OR HISTORY AND BUILD SOMEWHERE ELSE!! OF COURSE THIS WOUN’T HAPPEN, THE PPL ON THE COUCIL AND DECISION MAKING AREN’T EVEN FROM HERE, LOUISIANA, OUT OF STATE. THEY DON’T APPRECIATE OUR HISTORY OR ENVIORMENT!

No more building unless the voters approve it.

No more wasteful spending by the city council.

District Elections, change the way SSF is governed.

TELL the city council, show up at the meetings, it is YOUR city.

Watching the Council meeting right now and they are opting to have some public meetings in the future to get the residents feedback. They seem to think that we want to negotiate but I think most folks are just against this project period. Am I correct? Nevertheless stay tuned to see what dates they schedule these public meetings and try to attend. If you cannot attend then email your council. We cannot absorb any more building in this City. Traffic will be unbearable and the infrastructure cannot support it.
