Proposed 6-Story Hotel Development at 71 Camaritas: Neighborhood Meeting November 20th

South San Francisco, Ca   November 6, 2019 Submitted by Jake Ter (originated SSF FB pg)

On Nov. 20, there will be a neighborhood meeting to discuss a proposal for a new boutique hotel at 71 Camaritas, which currently is the site of Buri Buri Liquors and Ongpin Noodles. The meeting will take place at 7:00 pm at the Municipal Services Building (33 Arroyo). If you have questions or concerns about this project, we encourage you to attend the meeting, or feel free to contact the property owner: Surresh Gandhi at (650) 773-8176 or gandhicpa@yahoo.com. Alternatively, please contact the SSF Planning Division at (650) 877-8535. Below is a rendering of what the hotel might look like:

Currently:
{Please note the work being done on Westborough Blvd near the Golf Course will be utility buildings for the use of the Golf Course, there are no apartments going in there, as many have speculated.}

I really hope this gets rejected and wish I had attended the he meeting but found out about it too late. This is one of the dumbest ideas I’ve heard yet for development projects in the area. A 6 story hotel, “boutique” or not, does not belong in this residential area. Go build it on S Airport or to the east, where most other developers had the sense to do it. Once all the upcoming projects are completed, this area will be a disaster with ridiculous congestion. And they want to add a 6 story eye-sore here as well. More traffic, incoming and outgoing guests daily, more Uber and Lyft dropoffs and pickups. GO AWAY

6 stories is too high for a commercial establishment in Buri Buri. Shaded streets, no parking, no lower retail or neighborhood value locations, no reason to walk into that area. Down the street by Trader Joe’s, they converted the planned retail units into apartments. Now a walk down a street with closed retail spaces, no shopping or useful value, just big boring building due to the fact apartments bring in more $ per square foot than retail….so we all drive to Trader Joe’s. These big buildings need to subsidize ground level units for neighborhood benefit. The inside is sort of okay (but not enough seating areas for residents, just a good picture). The outside is abandoned concrete and just a good place for crime or skateboarders due to the nice empty sidewalk or someone that needs a corner to sleep in. People that live there are mostly okay inside the fortress, but outside its become terrible and desolate. My friends car was stolen in the locked garage. My other friend whom lived there was broken into, drugged and abused (which was not okay). Some investment/commitment and planning in creating walking traffic instead of isolated concrete in a cute neighborhood is critical….a tall concrete shaded building with 4 palm trees isn’t enough.

Well said Theresa. Eight years ago they were entertaining building two fifteen story towers on the parcel south of Kaiser Hospital. I believe the demise of the Redevelopment Agency temporarily killed that. They’ve since re-zoned again, post 2011, without my knowledge and here we go again. We share concerns about Geneva Towers revisited and this was my main motivation for getting involved. It seems we swapped a vertical Geneva Towers for a horizontal one.

As a member of a handful of concerned residents who have been investing much of their time and money in fighting uncontrolled development in South San Francisco, it is painfully obvious why our city officials have turned a deaf ear to us. There is very little community interaction with our officials and they utilize this disinterest to make their own self-serving decisions with largely no oversight. This community can not rely on a handful of people to carry the battle to these non-representatives. Show up at meetings! We need everyone to get involved and absent that, you have seen the future and sealed your own fate.

I work in SSF, but live in Brisbane. Everyone I talk with is unhappy with the out of control building going on in SSF. Many folks I know are leaving, or have plans to leave as soon as they can. Businesses cannot keep employees in any of the service or lower or medium paying jobs. I do understand there has been pressure from the State for more housing, but SSF has gone well beyond that. I continually find myself saying, South City has lost its mind! It appears to me (my complete assumption) that greed has taken over… but who is benefiting? Honestly, when I look at this giant residential buildings that have sprung up since the apartment at the end of Hillside/Twin Cities Blvd, all I think about are the Geneva Towers and The Pink Palace (Webster Street). Both demolished… both because they became havens for crime… basically housing failures. This model DOES NOT WORK!

Honestly, folks, you gotta show up, attend those meetings, make your voice heard, demonstrate if you have to, make some noise! Sitting home but continuing to complain about it or complaining online is not going to change things. If your City Counsel does not represent it’s residents, they can be recalled. It’s really up to all of you!

I agree with everyone’s posted comments. I have lived in SSF since 1957. I too don’t like the changes I have seen lately. At last Wednesday’s Council meeting about the 800 units of apts. on Mission Rd., I want to recognize Councilman Addiego for his comments that Senate Bill 35 is tying the City’s hands. As a neighbor on Arroyo Drive stated, perhaps more apts. can be snuck in under the disguise of a hotel, because a hotel could later be easily modified to apts. And SB35 will continue to allow all community protest to be stifled by the will of the developer. Glad to finally know about the purpose of the construction at the Calif. Golf Club. The excellent services provided to the community by the South City Car Wash are gone. The property will now become a multiple story apt. bldg.

It is incredible and short-sighted that there will be tons of apartments in the form of very tall structures, filling every square unoccupied inch of every city and and down the peninsula. South City already has tons of ugly apartments, they’ve even made the sidewalks and the roadway smaller to accomodate the ugly things. Now a hotel on Camaritas in addition to the 800 apartments that will be added on Mission Road and whatever they’re doing on the opposite side of Westborough and El Camino (where the car wash was). Building and “Planning”, and I use that term loosely, will lock that whole area up with nose to tail traffic. Buildings and Buildings and Buildings. Nothing fits, nothing looks “planned”, just yes men to developers.

Why don’t you built your apartments across from See’s Candy and the old movie theater that has been vacant for years.
What about Serramonte where Macy’s is plenty of parking area

Why don’t you listen to the people of SSF! Not only would a 6 story Hotel look out of place at this location but we DO NOT want the traffic of such an establishment.

Have lived on Arroyo for nearly 50 years, this hotel business is insane!!!!This is a residential neighborhood. It is a place for us to raise our families. We do not need a 6 story hotel in our neighborhood.

Of all things Buri Buri needs, a boutique hotel? What is the necessity for this? Tons of hotels in SSF by the airport and along El Camino. How about something necessary like public housing, or at least something fun

I just don’t understand why we would need this or the traffic it would add to this area. I live on Arroyo Dr but soooooo happy I’m not on that block. How are the people living on the first couple of houses going to feel with strangers coming and going , next to their back yards. Poor wild life that lives on that back lot. Too much construction going on already!!! yard. Really hope this doesn’t get approved

I don’t like the idea. We want the neighborhood to stay like it is – with the nice store and restaurant and other neighborhood businesses etc. The traffic congestion will be not to our liking. The hotel doesn’t look like it belongs there. I’m sure there are other places in which a 6 story hotel can be built. The businesses there are a part of us and we don’t want to see them go away.

I would love to know who in the community actually wants this? People want places to shop, places to gather as a community. Not more high rises and surely not a hotel in residential area where local businesses have been for years. Sad to see this happening to SSF. Another example of why people are leaving California. I really hope the City Council listens this time.

enough traffic already, if people are going to use the motel. Where the planners of such projects get the evidence that such projects will be profitable?

We don’t need a hotel in the middle of a neighborhood. What a ridiculous idea. Please attend meeting and speak up against it.

I agree with Charlie! Stop this ridiculous over building!!! My hometown is being chipped away. No more a sleepy, family oriented, close knit town it used to be. Let’s just keep displacing the small businesses. So very sad. In fact, I spend more time away from SSF than being here because it breaks my heart to watch what is happening.

One word, ugly like their Civic Campus which we didn’t vote for or approved.
what is the City going to do when there is a glut of overpriced apartments and the units go unoccupied, like at the Cadence at 400 Cypress?
I heard they are becoming Air BnBs and offer 6 weeks free rent.

What are they going to do when the old car wash apartments don’t get renters? become more Air BnBs?

Perhaps there wouldn’t be so many empty apartments if they’d lower rents so people could afford them.

Please do not build a boutique hotel here. I don’t even frequent the shops there now, but they are much more better. I think the city should focus on retaining the old neighborhood than doing a complete facelift. Please.

Keep hotels on El Camino and on Airport Blvd. Don’t encroach on residential areas. Buri Buri should not become a transit corridor. Affordable housing yes, hotels no.
