Mountain Lion in Westborough? Neighbors be aware!

South San Francisco, Ca   December 12, 2019

A South City resident sent us this photo, showing a dead dear, which he said was apparently killed by a mountain lion, up in the Westborough neighborhood, west of Athy Drive, by St Augustine.

While there have been no formal reports of this local sighting, or kill, mountain lion sightings in Pacifica have been reported a few times this year, most recently November, in the Westview area, which is not too far from South City. Last month we also had a warning out of San Bruno regarding a mountain lion in the Rollingwood neighborhood. So, we do know they roam amongst us, and we should heed this warning and be mindful of our environment when outdoors.

This seems a good time to remind folks of the information shared by San Bruno Police Department, as follows below:

Please remember these helpful tips regarding mountain lions:

•Don’t feed deer; it is illegal in California and it will attract mountain lions.
•Deer-proof your landscaping by avoiding plants that deer like to eat.
•Trim brush to reduce hiding places for mountain lions.
•Don’t leave small children or pets outside unattended.
•Install motion-sensitive lighting around the house.
•Don’t allow pets outside when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
•Bring pet food inside to avoid attracting raccoons, opossums and other potential mountain lion prey.
•Do not hike, bike, or jog alone.
•Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
•Keep a close watch on small children.
•Do not approach a mountain lion.
•If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects. Pick up small children.
•If attacked, fight back
