Car Dealership Proposed for Gellert Square

South San Francisco, CA   January 17, 2020

South City neighbors, especially those who live in the Westborough neighborhood near Gellert, are alarmed at hearing the Gellert Square property had been sold to a car dealership, believing that is not a good match for this area. Our sources have confirmed the property, which includes the shuttered Orchard Hardware Supply Building,Ling Nam, Toppings Academy of Martial Arts, Round Table, etc has not been sol,d and is still owned by Callan.

However, there are plans to lease this property to SF Mercedes, who will demo the existing buildings and build a luxury Mercedes dealership. The Safeway store, which is on a connecting property, will remain untouched.

It appears most of the businesses in the Gellert Square have plans to relocate nearby.  To date, it appears no permits have been pulled for any of these changes. We will update this as more information becomes available, at the request of neighbors who do not believe a car dealership belongs in this area.

seriously? a car dealership? rather have more retail stores, maybe a bakery or coffee shop. be nice to have another osh. even a DollarTree, CVS or ice cream shop would be better. don’t think we need more apartments though as there are a bunch of condos across the street, some renting for as much as $3500+. aren’t they building a massive apt complex on chestnut and el camino? and another big one by kaiser?

This is not a good fit for the neighborhood and pushing these local businesses out of the building where they’ve been for many years.

Are you serious????? I agree that there are enough car dealerships in Colma. AND what about the empty buildings where Toys r us was. AND what about the building were the dog store is moving from? Oh……forgot……Tear that down and put in a police dept, And what about all that empty property where Nordstroms rack and Joanns was?????? And what is going on with that property across from See’s???? Yet someone thinks a Mercedes dealership????? I agree, affordable housing (not 3,0000 a month). Everyone is screaming that they are working, yet living in their cars or rv’s and the city is wanting a car dealership. AND..oh…..this is just making my blood pressure rise……..Tired of stupidity

Yes. Absolutely. This what we need – housing across the street from condominiums. Residential neighborhood extension.

Really?! Why here?!! There’s a whole area of car dealerships in Colma where the business would fit in perfectly. I’m really beginning to di$like this current admini$tration. $eem$ like all they care about is revenue and care nothing about $$F re$ident$, and city pre$ervation. Out with the old and in with the new??!! More like out with the good and in with all their bad idea$ for thi$ city.

I think the property could be used for a better purpose.
