Letter to Editor: SSFUSD Requiring Classified Employees to Return to School Among Shelter in Place Mandate

South San Francisco, CA   March 28, 2020 by SSF resident

Day 12- SSFUD has now begun asking Classified employees in offices to report to work to interact with parents and students who drop by school to drop off forms and assignments.
Are we still not in a shelter in place situation??
Teachers continue and will continue to work remotely.
If your 65 or older you get to stay home, if you have a drs note you get to stay home and get paid without loss of accrued leave.
Those who have small children or who are caring for someone who could be at risk, can stay home, but must use their personal leave before they would get any other leave time, most likely half pay.
Where is the concern for our health and welfare?  Where is the respect they say they have for us?
Why does an Administrator with no medical backgrounds get to decide who gets to risk their life, while others can stay home and be safe?
These are the same folks who last year tried to cheat us out of .41% extra raise, while giving more to other groups.
NO SHAME NO COMPASSION NO RESPECT.

I don’t understand this order either. Wasn’t the order by the governor to shelter in place and limit contact? Everything should be done remotely and online. If the systems aren’t in place get working on putting those systems in place. Health and safety for EVERYONE should be paramount!

Someone gets it!! It is all about making sure there is a safety net in place. School Leaders have to follow what the health folks say, not interpret. Safety first questions later.

Essential workers are exempt from from the shelter- in -place requirement The decision to shut schools down comes from the County Dr. Scott Morrow, not the local administration.

The District abides by those orders and a skeleton crew of employees are scheduled to report back to work limited hours as schools continue to follow the safety protocols set by the County and State of Calif. ; but also try to provide instruction to students in these trying times.

More information at the District website. At least be fair before calling out the SSFUSD for bringing back a small amount of essential employees to work. Did you know that District Administrators were out at 4 schools during the first 2 weeks of the shut down during the spring break handing out over 9000 meals to District Students?

Ever wonder why Adminstration is serving the lunches? They are not represented and must do as directed. That said we all must work as directed, we all have jobs to do. Essential by whose definition ? There will be no students there, only folks dropping off paperwork, or registering for next school year! The point is we hear so many different things as employees. When isn’t in the job or the situation, it’s hard to understand. The Admin is in an impossible place to be at this time, we all are.
No one is putting them down or calling them out.

Unless I miss something the agenda is pretty clear. We’re still in a shelter in place, and employees are being told to return to interact with parents and students, while Teachers and others aren’t there. The folks being called back, are referred to as support staff, who do you support, when there is no one there to support?
