Letter to Editor: SSFUSD Requiring Teachers on Campuses – OUTRAGE

South San Francisco, CA   March 16, 2020 by A Concerned Resident

In an email all SSFUSD teachers received today, Superintendent Dr. Shawnterra Moore impressed upon teachers that Monday 3/16 and Tuesday 3/17 are mandatory work days. Schools have not been cleaned, and teachers are expected to congregate in faculty meetings, which in many cases ignore the county’s decree of gathering 50+ people.

Dr. Moore said that teachers who do not report for duty will use up their sick leave days (of which each person is allotted 10 per school year).

Many teachers are older, immunocompromised, or are caring for children at home — children who have been let off of school in districts throughout the Bay Area.

The school board made this decision to give teachers two days of planning time, but then urged teachers on Friday to send packets home before the end of the day. Many teachers complied with the latter directive and have no planning to do tomorrow or Tuesday.

Simply put, requiring teachers to be on campus for unnecessary meetings is irresponsible, hazardous, and unconscionable. Dr. Shawnterra Moore is flagrantly disregarding the health and well being of teachers and families.

EVEN IF NOBODY IS CURRENTLY SICK, SOMEONE COULD STILL BE CARRYING SYMPTOMS.

Please, Everything South City. Tell this story. Get the district to change its tune. At least allow the union some time to negotiate with district leadership before requiring teachers to gather in unsafe numbers in unclean rooms.

Sincerely, A concerned resident

This dr moore person should be fired. Or better yet, let him sit at the recepiton desk of a school to greet and interact with everyone.

Dr, Shawnterra, you’re SO wrong. You’re a Doctor and you don’t understand what is a pandemia?? I hope you lost al the respect from the teachers and from all the people that work for the District. I’m trying to comprehend how someone with such a high position would allow this to happen. I feel so bad for all the teachers and staff. Use your sick days? Gosh, how absurd.

Office staff has to go to work amid a shelter in place tomorrow and possibly all other days or use their sick leave as well. I believe teachers were told to pack up today and prepare for distance learning. But office staff must stay at work. No one can tell us if we are getting paid for sure or not. We have to put ourselves at risk while interacting with students and parents who come on campus. Nutrition service workers will have to come into contact with the public by handing out meals. I feel for the doctors and nurses etc. but the less people out in public open to being contagious or possibly contracting the disease, the better.

Dr. Moore is far from irresponsible. If there are teachers who wish to stay home, obviously that is their right. The teachers needed to get the online schooling set up and communicate with us parents today and tomorrow. Luckily they are there for two days for our youngsters to go back and pick up anything they missed or accidentally left behind in lockers which was our case. These are not unnecessary meetings – these preparations had to be made with rapidly changing logistics for online schooling. I thank those teachers who have our children’s interests uppermost and understand those who may make the decision to protect their health and their loved ones by staying home. This is not the time to be blaming teachers and Dr. Moore.
