South San Francisco, CA April 21, 2020 by Mel Ellison
In the mornings, I spend a lot of time watching the eastern sky, and I’m usually there to catch the first glimpse of light as dawn breaks.
Lately it’s been very dull and gray with thick overcast for most of the morning, followed by a slow clearing….and bright, mostly unobstructed sunlight save for a few puffy white clouds as the morning passes to afternoon.
Then there are the rare moments like the ones captured in this photo….almost ethereal moments that tend to not last very long….maybe 5 minutes tops…..but offer a glimpse of something grander than the ordinary….moments that almost take your breath away and remind you of just how lovely this planet really is. You could regard these moments as metaphorical, I suppose…sort of a visual representation of a hope for better things….or maybe a flash of insight perhaps, where we see just how we’ve muddled everything up in the world, and how amazing it could be.
But I really prefer not to overthink it in that way. In fact, I find it’s best if I don’t think at all and allow my mind to fall silent….and just simply marvel at the visual feast.
Wishing you a day full of bright moments!

Hi Mel. In the early ’70s I met you at a party I attended with Lawanda While. I even met your black lab whose home was the whole neighborhood. Anyway, when you found out I played tenor sax, you pulled out yours and let me hear you. Your solo blew me away. I still reminisce on that brief meeting with you as being one of the most unforgettable experiences of my short musical life. For years I wondered about you and lately I found a mint copy of your Friends LP. I had a company, Audio-Restorations, do their magic and I now have a CD of that LP from 40 years ago.
Do you still play in the bay area? I’d love for my wife to hear you play. She would love it just like I would.
