CAL FIRE and the SMCFD to Conduct Dam-Facing Burn on SFPUC Land Tuesday June 16th

South San Francisco, CA  June 15, 2020 Submitted by SMC Alert System

Crews with CAL FIRE, the San Mateo County Fire Department and the Ben Lomond Adult Conservation Fire Camp in Santa Cruz plan to conduct a one-day, dam-facing burn on 8 acres of San Francisco Public Utilities Commission watershed property on Tuesday, June 16, 2020.

The burn will begin at 9:00am, and light smoke will be visible from parts of I-280 in San Mateo County. There is no need to call 911.

The burn will be conducted on grass that has cured, and SFPUC biologists have surveyed the area for the presence of the San Francisco water snake, the red-legged frog, and special status plants. None were found. Biologists will search the area once more before the burn begins.

The burn will be conducted with assistance from the SFPUC, and under the guidelines of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. The goal of this annual burn is to reduce fire fuels and maintain the integrity of the earthen dam. It also provides training for firefighters as fire season gets into full swing.
