SSFPD Media Release: SSFPD Officer Injured During Arrest of Suspect with Firearm

South San Francisco, CA  June 16, 2020 Submitted by SSFPD

On June 16th, 2020 at approximately 7:42 a.m., South San Francisco Police Officers responded to an apartment complex on the 600 block Commercial Avenue on the report of a disturbance where a female caller stated her ex-boyfriend, Ulysses Gutierrez (San Francisco), was outside her apartment. Gutierrez was reportedly refusing to leave and sending texts to her that he was going to vandalize her vehicle.

Officers contacted Gutierrez at the apartment complex and, during a consent search, he suddenly tried to flee from officers. Gutierrez was subsequently detained by officers a short distance away. A loaded firearm as well as a fully loaded spare magazine was found concealed on Gutierrez’s person.

A records check on the firearm revealed it was reported stolen out of another state. A records check of Gutierrez revealed he was a convicted felon, with prior convictions for carrying a loaded firearm in public. Gutierrez was also on two counts of Post Release Community Supervision for false imprisonment and assault likely to produce great bodily injury.

During the apprehension of Gutierrez, an officer struck their head and temporarily lost consciousness. The officer was transported to a local hospital where they received medical treatment and has since been discharged.

Gutierrez was subsequently arrested on multiple firearm-related charges, possession of stolen property, and resisting arrest with serious bodily injury. He was transported to the San Mateo County Jail in Redwood City where he was booked on the listed charges.

Today is June 29th. By this time, I’m sure he’s been released and back out on the streets. We don’t want to overcrowd the jail system.
