South San Francisco, CA July 29, 2020
California State Department of Public Health has added San Mateo County to the ‘Watch List’ now joining the other Bay Area counties, and one of 38 counties Statewide to be named. According to ABCChannel 7 News, there are six factors that will land a county on the list, yet acknowledge they do not know at this time what actually put SMC on the list. The criteria are as follows:
- Doing fewer than 150 tests per 100,000 residents daily (over a 7-day average)
- More than 100 new cases per 100,000 residents over the past 14 days…
- Or having more than 25 new cases per 100,000 residents and an 8% test positivity rate
- 10% or greater increase in COVID-19 hospitalized patients over the past 3 days
- Fewer than 20% of ICU beds available
- Fewer than 25% ventilators available
As of today, San Mateo County has reported 5,306 COVID-19 cases and 118 deaths from the virus.
“If we remain on the watch list for three consecutive days then hair salons, nail salons, other personal care services, gyms, malls, places of worship, and offices for non-critical sectors which have been open for a month now will be forced to close.” San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa stated on Facebook. “This means we have to double down on the core behaviors of wearing face coverings, practicing physical distancing, avoiding large crowds and washing our hands. Otherwise, economic distress and poverty will be pervasive.”
