Have you heard the latest about our local football programs? South San Francisco High School head coach Dion Evans, along with school administrators, have decided that they do not have enough players for a Varsity football team this year for SSFHS. It has been announced the Jr Varsity program will continue, for now, with hopes they might have a Varsity team in 2022
This decision has come after the PAL schedule had already been released, leaving SSFHS forfeiting all their scheduled varsity games, including the annual Bell Game scheduled for November 6, 2021.
Well, it looks like El Camino High School will get to keep the Bell Game Trophy for the 4th year in a row. Which leads us to question, what will happen next season?
Youth Football across the Peninsula has seen lower numbers bringing less and less football players to the high school level as in years past.
Could this American past time be slowly dying from our County? What are your thoughts or observations? Let us know in the comments below!
Warriors still lead the Bell series vs Colts warriors lead that 48 – 9 all time

just shocked hearing this story
As an alumni of SSFHS Warrior football teams (’83, ’84, ’85), why is there a lack of interest from students to participate in high school football?
There has a been a great deal of Coach turnover the last few years resulting in inconsistency and probably can provide the explanation for the 24 game loss streak. We have a large number of students on the JV, but the current Coach who did Coach last years 2020 Varsity team, did not want to risk freshman and sophomores playing against Varsity kids. These sophomores will make up the Varsity team next year. Also, COVID.
Being my son is graduate of EL Camino (2018) and the great tradition South City High for its football program, this is a sad event. I do not know the resolution. I know many South City residents send their kids to private schools such as Serra and Sacred Heart Cathedral, which draws many the best athletes away from our local public schools.
So sad to hear this! The Bell
game was always a huge Rival Game and all the Alumni’s and current families would look forward too. SSFHS needs to do something to bring the numbers up. Those poor Seniors. 2 years with no football .
Seniors did have football last year. We currently have a good size roster on our JV team and at least half of those kids will make up the Varsity team next year.
