SMC 2020 Annual Crop Report Shows 28.5% Decease from 2019

South San Francisco, CA  September 16, 2021 SMC Press Release

At the Sept. 14, 2021, San Mateo County Board of Supervisors’ meeting, Agricultural Commissioner Koren Widdel presented the 2020 Annual Crop Report, highlighting losses some commodity groups experienced due to the pandemic and CZU Lightning fires.

Vegetables and floral and nursery crops, for example, the two commodity groups that make up 86 percent of San Mateo County’s production value, posted significant losses due in part to market closures early in the pandemic and unpredictable consumer demand.

Fluctuations are expected to continue in forest products because of the CZU fire damage and changing forest management policies. The total estimated gross value of San Mateo County agricultural production in 2020 was $93,156,500, a decrease of 28.5 percent from 2019
