Sheila Gilson named new Senior Vice President and Area Manager
Sheila Gilson has been named Senior Vice President and Area Manager of the Kaiser Permanente San Mateo Service Area. Gilson will have oversight of and is responsible for hospital operations and the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan for the area that includes the South San Francisco and Redwood City medical centers and serves more than 257,000 members.
“I am proud to work alongside our dedicated care teams who put our members and patients’ needs at the forefront of everything they do,” Gilson said. “We will continue to build upon our mission of improving the overall health and well-being of our members and the communities we serve.”
Gilson has led Kaiser Permanente’s Redwood City Medical Center since February 2017. She will now also oversee the 1,200 employees and staff, working in partnership with more than 400 physicians at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco.
In her expanded leadership role, Gilson will focus on providing convenient options for care by increasing access to both primary and specialty care in Redwood City and South San Francisco, including Kaiser Permanente Redwood City’s Advanced Neuroscience Center, which includes neurosurgery, neurology, and neuroscience departments that provide specialized treatment of complex stroke and neurological disorders. The medical center is also a long-time accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center.
“Sheila’s breadth of experience and dedication to providing exceptional care will prove benefit our members, patients, and the communities we serve,” said Carrie Owen Plietz, FACHE, president of Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California region. “We are excited to have Sheila continuing to guide our teams in Redwood City and know she will provide the same level of support and care to our teams in South San Francisco.”
Gilson started her career as a bedside nurse at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco, and since then has held numerous leadership positions. Gilson has also worked on various assignments in the Kaiser Permanente Northern California region.
Gilson will continue to focus on being a leader in the San Mateo County community. Gilson previously served on the Skyline Community College Board for several years and the Hospital Consortium of San Mateo County. Currently, Gilson is a member of the San Mateo CEO section of the Hospital Council Northern & Central California.
Gilson completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from California State University Dominquez Hills and received her Master of Science in Management from Notre Dame De Namur University.
