Today {April 11,2023}, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 in favor of an ordinance restricting the county’s cooperation with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), ending double punishment for undocumented residents.

Board President Pine and Board Supervisor Canepa co-sponsored the ordinance, which Supervisors Noelia Corzo and Warren Slocum supported. Supervisor Ray Mueller was the only dissenting vote.

During the meeting, Supervisor Corzo spoke to the distrust between the immigrant community and immigration services. She shared her firsthand accounts of interactions with ICE. One story she shared, was when she confronted ICE Agents with her newborn in her arms after hearing the agents yelling at her neighbors, threatening and telling them to “shut up” while her neighbors cried.

“I am deeply grateful to the community activists for playing a critical role in bringing this ordinance to fruition. Thank you to Board President Pine and Board Supervisor Canepa for their courage in sponsoring this ordinance and to Sheriff Christina Corpus for her solid support. This is an important step towards ensuring that all our residents feel safe and protected, regardless of their immigration status,” said Supervisor Corzo. “This vote shows that San Mateo County respects and values all its residents, and we will continue working towards a more just and equitable society.”

The ordinance makes permanent that law enforcement and other county officials cannot use county resources cooperate with ICE in matters related to immigration enforcement, including ICE requests for notification of release, access to county facilities, and sharing information about individuals in custody.

The Board of Supervisors believes this ordinance is a crucial step towards building a stronger and more inclusive community for all residents of San Mateo County.
