Pickleball is making waves in South San Francisco. Well-known for its fun, accessible, and social nature, locals of all ages are starting to pick up their paddles and explore the world of pickleball.

It’s not all about playing games, however – pickleball is about joining a community, making new friends, and enjoying an activity that’s easy to get to grips with yet challenging to master.

South San Francisco’s vibrant community has always embraced new trends, and pickleball is no exception. Join us as we uncover the rise of this sport in our city and discover why so many residents now call the pickleball court their second home.

What Is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a dynamic paddle sport that blends together elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. In games, players will volley a perforated plastic ball over a low net using their paddles, aiming to score points by making their ‘dinks’ hard to return.

There are usually two players on each team, although singles games aren’t uncommon. Pickleball can be played on both indoor or outdoor courts, which means a lot of venues now offer it as an option.

Aside from being fun and challenging, pickleball also offers a range of health benefits. It can lead to improved coordination, balance, and a boost in mental agility, for instance, but unlike many sports, pickleball is played at a more relaxed pace.

If you’re interested in learning how to play pickleball, get yourself down to a court immediately and join the 36.5 million pickleball players that participated in games across the US last year.

Everyone can also play on 4 courts outdoor at Westborough Park and 4 outdoor courts at Buri Buri Park. Note that they only have two nets at each park, but you can bring your own to play on the other two courts at each park!
