South San Francisco FREE Shuttle Expands Operations with New Western Route

South San Francisco, CA September 7, 2023 Press Release

The City of South San Francisco will be launching its new and third shuttle route – the Western (Orange) Route – on Monday, September 11, 2023.

The new Western Route will provide free transportation service to neighborhoods primarily west of El Camino that have limited or no existing local transit service, including Winston Manor, Serra Highlands, Buri Buri, Avalon, and Westborough. Aside from the expanded access this route will deliver to more schools, parks, the new Library | Parks & Recreation building, senior centers, and the Westborough Shopping Center, it will also be a transit connector to the current clockwise and counterclockwise routes of the SSF Shuttle, SamTrans, BART, and provide closer access to Caltrain. This 55-minute route will operate its 11 daily trips to 37 stops on Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and will include wheelchair access and a bike rack for its riders.

“On behalf of my fellow council, we are thrilled and proud to see the new western route of the SSF Shuttle come to fruition,” said Vice Mayor Mark Nagales. “This route is a great example of the City’s comprehensive approach in expanding a free, safe, and reliable transportation option to many more members of our South San Francisco community.”

The City of South San Francisco has successfully applied and been awarded funding for the operation of the SSF Shuttle by the San Mateo County Transportation Authority’s Shuttle Program for the last 9 years. Starting as a pilot program in 2014 with one shuttle and serving 11 stops, the program’s ridership expanded in 2018 with a second shuttle serving over 20 stops with its clockwise and counter clockwise routes. In February 2023, the City Council authorized the City’s submittal of a funding application and match by resolution and was successfully awarded by the San Mateo County Transportation Authority for continued and expanded operations of the SSF Shuttle until fiscal year 2024-25.

The City will host a ribbon cutting ceremony this Friday, September 8, 2023 in the Westborough Park parking lot (2350 Galway Dr.) at 11:30 a.m. and light refreshments will be served. All members of the community are welcome to attend.

Information regarding the SSF Shuttle’s new western route is available on the City’s website at www.ssf.net/shuttle. For questions or additional information, please email [email protected] or call Public Works at (650) 877-8550

Heard this was possible by grants the City applied, for NICE ! The price of gas makes this a more valuable public service.

It would be helpful if the map was in PDF format to download.

Good. However it desperately needs stops at major destination/transit connection points like especially: BRAT and the Skyline College Transit Center!
Any consideration will be most welcome
