Some background
South City resident and princess warrior, Juliana Pena was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer, on April 11, 2011. Her parents, Jesus and Patricia, were amazing advocates fighting for the best treatment possible for their little daughter. On February 24, 2012 less than a year after being diagnosed, Juliana took her last breathe. She was only 33 months and 3 days old.
Juliana’s parents had made a promise to this young warrior who fought so hard, and gave so much to those around her, that they would continue her fight after she was gone. They would fight for a cure to this deadly disease that robbed them of their daughter and advocate so other families would not know this pain. Read more about Juliana’s story HERE
What is Neuroblastoma?
Neuroblastoma is a tumor of nerve tissue that develops in infants and children and can occur in many areas of the body. It develops from the tissues that form the sympathetic nervous system (which controls body functions, such as heart rate and blood pressure, digestion and levels of certain hormones). It most commonly begins in the abdomen in the tissues of the adrenal gland, but it may also occur in other areas. It can spread to the lymph nodes, liver, bones and bone marrow.
