South San Francisco Hosts Movie Night in the Park and Community Workshop at Orange Memorial Park
Anchoring summer activities in South San Francisco, the Parks and Recreation Department will host Movie Night in the Park and a Community Workshop on Friday, July 18. The event will feature the family movie classic, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial on a projected screen at the southeast side of the Joseph A. Fernekes Building at Orange Memorial Park. Prior to the movie, the Department will be hosting a Community Workshop inside the building from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm to capture a second round of community feedback for the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The Master Plan aims to create a roadmap for park and recreation priorities for the next five to ten years. Following the Community Workshop, the movie will begin at 8:00 pm and end at 10:00 pm.
At the event, guests are encouraged to bring sleeping bags, blankets, and low-lounge chairs to complement their picnic and viewing experience. Participants can purchase food from a food truck onsite or buy snacks from the Parks and Recreation Department within the Joseph A. Fernekes Building. Additionally, there will also be a children’s letter-writing station dedicated to writing letters to the Grim Troop of the 3rd Cavalry in the U.S. Army and Mathew Zander, a South San Francisco Police Explorer who recently left the City to serve the Country in Afghanistan.
Last year, two Movie Night in the Park events generated over 700 participants. Families, friends and neighbors were given the opportunity to meet one another and to enjoy a family movie classic at Orange Memorial Park. The Parks and Recreation Department aims to continue efforts for Movie Night in the Park, working closely with the Police Department and Fire Department to ensure a safe, family-friendly environment throughout the night.
The South San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department’s mission is to provide opportunities for physical, cultural and social well-being; protect and enhance the physical environment; and ensure the effective and efficient use of public facilities and open space. Movie Night in the Park includes two nights aimed at bringing together residents for family-friendly activities in the park. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial will be shown on July 18, and The Lego Movie will be shown on August 15. Both events are scheduled for Orange Memorial Park at 8:00 pm.
Children are expected to attend both Movie Night in the park, please keep pets at home. This is a non-alcoholic event. Please arrive early to ensure a spot on the lawn.
